# micro-interaction

A skill for small UI motion: hover and press feedback, toggles, toasts, drawers, list reordering. Useful when an interface needs to feel responsive.

## What it does

The skill covers functional motion: hover, press and focus feedback, switches, like buttons, toasts and drawers entering and leaving, list add and remove, and loading → success → error transitions. It sets the ground rules too — 100–250ms for micro-interactions, animating only `transform` and `opacity`, asymmetric enter and exit timing, easing curves, and a `prefers-reduced-motion` guard.

The main path is Framer Motion, imported as `motion/react` since v11. Gestures use `whileHover`, `whileTap` and `whileFocus`; springs are tuned with `stiffness` and `damping`; exit animations need `AnimatePresence` around conditionally rendered children with a stable `key`, and `mode="popLayout"` keeps removed toasts and list items from holding space. Then there is `layout` and `layoutId` for reordering and shared-element transitions between components. A no-JS path exists as well: CSS transitions, `@starting-style` and `transition-behavior: allow-discrete` so even a `display` toggle animates.

One catch worth knowing before you reach for `layout`: it distorts `border-radius` and text during scale. The fix is adding `layout` to direct children so they counter-scale, or using `layout="position"` to animate position only. For a Framer Motion demo, React and `motion` load from CDN via `esm.sh`, so no build step is needed. Verification pins a state through `?state=` in the URL, and `scripts/seek-shot.sh` plus `scripts/contact-sheet.sh` capture and tile the frames.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill micro-interaction -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/micro-interaction/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/micro-interaction/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill micro-interaction -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/micro-interaction/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill micro-interaction -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/micro-interaction/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/web-animation-skills micro-interaction
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/micro-interaction/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**

```
2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/web-animation-skills --path skills/micro-interaction
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/micro-interaction/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill micro-interaction -a opencode
```
## When to use it
- add instant press feedback to a button
- make a toast slide in and out cleanly
- animate list reordering without jank
- move a card between two views as one element
- keep loading, success and error in one continuous motion
## Example prompts
- add a hover and press effect to this button with motion/react
- build a toast that slides up and exits through AnimatePresence
- animate the list reorder with layout
# Micro-interactions (UI Motion)
Small, functional motion that makes an interface feel responsive and alive: hover/press/focus feedback, toggles, toasts, drawers, and list/layout animation. The goal is feedback and continuity, not decoration.
## When to use
- Hover/press/focus feedback; toggles, checkboxes, like/heart buttons
- Toasts/snackbars, drawers, modals, tooltips, accordions (enter/exit)
- List add/remove/reorder; shared-element ("magic move") layout transitions
- Loading → success → error state transitions
## Principles (apply to all of it)
- Duration: UI micro-interactions live in **100–250ms**. Anything over ~400ms feels laggy for a click response.
- Animate `transform` and `opacity` only — they are GPU-composited (no layout/paint). Avoid animating `width/height/top/left`; use `scale` or layout animation instead.
- Give **instant** press feedback: `scale: 0.96` on tap with a fast spring.
- Asymmetric timing: enter slightly slower (ease-out), exit faster (ease-in). Things should arrive gracefully and leave promptly.
- Respect `prefers-reduced-motion`: gate non-essential motion; keep opacity changes, drop large movement.
- Easing defaults: ease-out for entrances `cubic-bezier(0.16, 1, 0.3, 1)`; a tasteful overshoot is `cubic-bezier(0.34, 1.56, 0.64, 1)`; standard move `cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1)`.
## Framer Motion (motion/react) essentials
As of v11+, the package is imported as `motion/react` (the `framer-motion` name still works).
### Gestures and springs
```jsx
import { motion } from "motion/react";

<motion.button
  whileHover={{ scale: 1.03 }}
  whileTap={{ scale: 0.96 }}
  whileFocus={{ boxShadow: "0 0 0 3px rgba(59,130,246,.5)" }}
  transition={{ type: "spring", stiffness: 400, damping: 30 }}
/>
```
