# codebase-documenter

Walks an unfamiliar repo and writes documentation for it: architecture, key components, data flow, development guidelines. Handy for onboarding and handovers.

## What it does

The skill reads a codebase and turns it into markdown docs. It explores the project with an Explore agent, maps directories with Glob, reads the README, entry points and core modules, greps for import and export patterns, traces execution paths, and pulls knowledge out of comments and tests. Then it stitches all of that into prose.

Output lands in `docs/`: `README.md` with an overview and quick start, plus `ARCHITECTURE.md`, `DEVELOPMENT.md`, `API.md`, `DEPLOYMENT.md` and `CONTRIBUTING.md`. Ask for a single combined document if you would rather not split it. Diagrams come out as Mermaid, and claims are backed by `file:line` references, so you can check them against the source.

You pick the depth up front: a quick overview, standard coverage, or a deep pass with examples. On a large repo the deep mode takes a while, because the skill actually reads files instead of guessing from names. Installing into Claude goes through `npx`, so Node.js has to be on the machine.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --skill codebase-documenter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/codebase-documenter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --skill codebase-documenter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --skill codebase-documenter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace codebase-documenter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --skill codebase-documenter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --path productivity-skills-plugin/skills/codebase-documenter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace --skill codebase-documenter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mhattingpete/claude-skills-marketplace/tree/HEAD/productivity-skills-plugin/skills/codebase-documenter/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get oriented in someone else's repo before the first edit
- produce onboarding docs for a new developer
- describe architecture and data flow as they actually are
- write down local setup and testing steps
- prepare a deployment and rollback section

## Example prompts
- explain this codebase and write the breakdown into docs/
- document the architecture with Mermaid diagrams
- create onboarding docs for this repo, standard depth

## Approach

1. **Explore** using Explore agent (thorough)
2. **Map structure** with Glob
3. **Read critical files** (README, entry points, core modules)
4. **Identify patterns** with Grep (imports, exports)
5. **Trace execution** paths

7. **Synthesize** into cohesive documentation

## Output

Creates markdown documentation:
```
docs/
