# metric-creation

Walks an agent through defining a Honeydew business metric on an entity: build the aggregation SQL, then push it with the MCP tools. For KPIs reused across dashboards.

## What it does

First the skill has the agent confirm the session context with `get_session_workspace_and_branch`, and spin up a branch via `create_workspace_branch` when real development work is coming (the session switches on its own). Then comes the SQL.

Only aggregations are allowed. Window functions, joins and subqueries are out. So is `COUNT(*)` — the skill points to the entity's built-in count metric, or to counting the primary key. Where a base metric already exists, the expression should reference it by name rather than repeat the SQL. Writes go through `create_object` with full YAML; edits need an `object_key` from `search_model` in `EXACT` mode and go through `update_object`, deletions through `delete_object`. After a successful write the skill tells the agent to show you the returned `ui_url`.

The skill asks before guessing. A request like revenue per day can mean a breakdown or a single average figure, and the two give different SQL. Keep in mind all of this runs on Honeydew's MCP tools, so without them there is nothing to call.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill metric-creation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metric-creation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metric-creation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill metric-creation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metric-creation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill metric-creation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metric-creation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins metric-creation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metric-creation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill metric-creation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --path skills/metric-creation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metric-creation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill metric-creation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- define a reusable aggregation for a Honeydew entity
- confirm the workspace branch before touching the model
- write metric SQL that passes the no-window, no-join rules
- swap a hand-written row count for the entity's own count metric
- edit an existing metric YAML through its `object_key`

## Example prompts
- Create a metric revenue on the orders entity, summing the amount field, owner is me
- Look up the active_users metric with `search_model` in `EXACT` mode and fix its description
- Ask me whether revenue per day means a breakdown or an average before you build it

## Prerequisites

Before creating metrics, ensure you are on the correct workspace and branch. Use `get_session_workspace_and_branch` to check the current session context. For development work, create a branch with `create_workspace_branch` (the session switches automatically). See the `workspace-branch` skill for the full workspace/branch tool reference.

---

## Overview

A Honeydew **metric** is a named, reusable aggregation anchored to an entity.
Unlike a calculated attribute (which is per-row), a metric collapses multiple rows into a
single value.
Metrics are **context-sensitive**: they automatically respond to whatever filters and
groupings the consuming BI tool or analyst applies.

**Your job is to build an aggregation function that users can later group by.**

If a user asks for a group by ("sum sales by category"), ignore the group. You're building the aggregation to sum sales by ANYTHING. The user will later use it in a query with their chosen dimensions.

Use a metric when:

- The same aggregation logic is reused across dashboards, teams, or tools
- You need a governed, single source of truth for a KPI (e.g. "revenue", "active users")
- The calculation involves combining other metrics (ratios, deltas)

**Do not** use a metric when the value is per-row (use a calculated attribute instead).

---

## Building the SQL Expression

### Core Rules

- **MUST use an aggregation function** — metrics collapse rows
- **DO NOT use window functions** — only aggregations allowed
- **DO NOT use joins or subqueries** — simple expressions only
- **NEVER use COUNT(\*)** — use the entity's built-in count metric (e.g., `entity.count`) if available,
  or `COUNT(entity.key_field)` on the primary key. No `DISTINCT` needed — primary keys are
  unique by definition.
- **Compose from existing metrics whenever possible.** Honeydew accepts named metric references
  (`entity.metric_name`) anywhere you'd write a raw aggregation — inside `FILTER (WHERE ...)`, inside
  `GROUP BY (...)` (both fixed `GROUP BY (dim)` and nested `GROUP BY (*, dim)`), and as operands
