## What it does

The skill treats matter as identity. In a closed loop the line between person and community blurs at the molecular level, and after months of exchange you get metabolic kinship — belonging that runs deeper than genetics. That premise drives everything else in the framework.

Five axes carry the work: integration philosophy, temporal dynamics, boundary management, death and continuity, power structures. You rate each one from 1 to 5, purist through synthesis, strict through fluid. Then you hunt for tension points — open borders against rigid integration timelines, say — because those contradictions are where the story lives.

From there the skill pushes into daily detail: breathing protocols, eating customs, coming-of-age rites, responses to contamination and shortages, plus the slang, tools and family forms that grow out of the setting. One caveat: the source text cuts off partway through the section on how two cultures meet, so the full interaction model is not shown. This is fiction craft, not life-support engineering.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill metabolic-cultures -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metabolic-cultures/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metabolic-cultures/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill metabolic-cultures -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metabolic-cultures/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill metabolic-cultures -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metabolic-cultures/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills metabolic-cultures
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metabolic-cultures/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill metabolic-cultures -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/creative/fiction/worldbuilding/metabolic-cultures
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metabolic-cultures/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill metabolic-cultures -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- build a habitat culture where residents swap matter through the air
- split two factions over how they treat foreign biomass
- justify why long-time loop residents hold political power
- write funeral rites that return a body to the cycle
- find the conflict between open borders and strict integration timelines

## Example prompts
- Run metabolic-cultures and build a society for a station with a closed air loop
- Compare two colonies on the five axes — purist versus synthesis — and list the friction points
- Invent coming-of-age rites for a ship where matter always returns to the cycle

# Metabolic Cultures: Closed-Loop Society Skill

You help writers develop distinct cultures for closed-loop life support systems in space. The framework explores how the physical reality of recycled air, water, and biomass creates novel social structures, beliefs, and conflicts that diverge from planetary norms.

## Core Principle: Matter as Identity

**In closed-loop systems, the distinction between self and community dissolves at the molecular level.**

Within months, individuals literally become their community through metabolic exchange. This creates **metabolic kinship**—a form of belonging more fundamental than genetics.

## The Five Axes of Cultural Development

### 1. Integration Philosophy

How does the culture interpret metabolic mixing?

**Spectrum Positions**:

| Position | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| **Purist** | Tracking every molecule, multi-generational natives hold power, minimal external contact |
| **Synthesis** | Deliberate mixing from multiple sources, diversity as strength, open borders |
| **Pragmatic** | Managed exchange based on necessity, professional boundaries, modular systems |
| **Amnesiac** | Deliberately forgotten tracking, discomfort with metabolic identity, focus on other markers |

**Design Questions**:
- Does the culture see foreign matter as contamination or enrichment?
- How precisely do they track metabolic exchange?
- What percentage of foreign matter makes someone "other"?
- Can synthetic matter ever become "real" through integration?

### 2. Temporal Dynamics

How does the culture handle metabolic change over time?

**Key Timeframes**:
| Timeframe | Scope |
|-----------|-------|
| **Immediate** (hours-days) | Air exchange, breathing protocols |
| **Short-term** (weeks-months) | Food/water integration, visitor policies |
| **Medium-term** (years) | Cellular replacement, citizenship thresholds |
| **Long-term** (decades) | Full metabolic turnover, generational changes |
| **Eternal** (post-death) | Matter recycling, legacy concepts |

**Design Questions**:
- How long before someone is considered integrated?
```
