# metabase-representation-format

A skill that explains Metabase's YAML serialization format: collections, cards, dashboards, segments, measures, transforms and data apps. Useful when an agent edits or validates those files.

## What it does

Metabase keeps user-created content as a tree of YAML files, one entity per file. The format is portable between instances: numeric database IDs are swapped for readable names and entity IDs. The skill covers 14 entity types, from Collection and Card through Transform, Action and Data App, along with entity schemas, MBQL and native queries, visualization settings and parameters.

The part that trips people up: where a file sits in the tree decides nothing. Placement in Metabase comes entirely from fields — `collection_id`, `parent_id` on a collection, `dashboard_id` or `document_id` on a card. Move a file without touching the fields and nothing changes. Update the fields and leave the file where it is, and the import still lands correctly. So if your agent shuffles a card into another folder and expects a result, check the fields instead.

The spec ships next to the skill as `spec.md`, sourced from the `@metabase/representations` npm package. That package also carries a CLI: `npx @metabase/representations validate-schema` checks a tree of YAML files against the format. Metabase imports YAML only from top-level directories — `collections/`, `databases/`, `python_libraries/`, `glossary/`, `transforms/`, `actions/`, `data_apps/`. Anything else is ignored.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-representation-format -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metabase-representation-format/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-representation-format -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-representation-format -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metabase/agent-skills metabase-representation-format
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-representation-format -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills --path skills/metabase-representation-format
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-representation-format -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/metabase-representation-format/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a card YAML with an MBQL query and visualization settings
- nest collections through `parent_id` instead of folders
- validate a file tree with `validate-schema` before import
- describe a dashboard with a grid, parameters and tabs
- move content between Metabase instances without numeric IDs

## Example prompts
- Create a Metabase card YAML with a native SQL query and a table visualization
- Check why this collection imports at the root — look at `parent_id`
- Describe a dashboard with a date filter and two cards in the grid

## Metabase Representation Format

Metabase represents user-created content as a tree of YAML files. Each file is one entity (a collection, card, dashboard, etc.). The format is **portable** across Metabase instances: numeric database IDs are replaced with human-readable names and entity IDs.

The format is defined by a spec bundled alongside this file as `spec.md` (upstream source: the `@metabase/representations` npm package). The same package ships a CLI (`npx @metabase/representations validate-schema`) that validates a tree of YAML files against the format.

## Entities

The format defines 14 entity types.

| Entity | SerDes Model | Description |
|--------|-------------|-------------|
| **Collection** | `Collection` | Folder-like container for organizing content. Hierarchy via `parent_id`. Namespaces: `null` (main), `"snippets"`, `"transforms"`, `"data-actions"`, `"data-apps"`. |
| **Card** | `Card` | Question, model, or metric. Holds an MBQL or native `dataset_query`. Display types: table, bar, line, pie, scalar, etc. Card types: `"question"`, `"model"`, `"metric"`. |
| **Dashboard** | `Dashboard` | Grid layout (24 columns) of cards with filter parameters and optional tabs. Contains `dashcards` array for card placement and `parameters` array for filter controls. |
| **Document** | `Document` | Rich text page using ProseMirror AST. Can embed cards via `cardEmbed` nodes and link to entities via `smartLink` nodes. |
