## What it does

Reach for this skill the first time you wire `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react` into a project. The agent moves one step at a time and asks a single question per step instead of laying out the whole plan.

It starts by creating `.env.metabase` in the project root and adding it to `.gitignore`, then asks you to fill in `METABASE_INSTANCE_URL` and `METABASE_ADMIN_API_KEY`. You generate the key in the Metabase admin under `/admin/settings/authentication/api-keys`. Until that key exists the agent will not detect the version, install packages or write code, because any API call without it comes back 401. From there it reads the edition and major version from the tag, turns on the Embedding SDK through the API, searches for dashboards and table candidates, and asks which ones to embed. Pick a table and it generates an X-ray dashboard and saves it.

The third step pulls the docs for your major version, sets up JWT SSO and installs the SDK. Keep the signing secret server-side as `METABASE_JWT_SECRET` — it must never sit in a browser-accessible env var. Metabase below major version 49 is a dead end here, since the Embedding SDK needs 49 or newer, and the skill stops. On Enterprise instances (tag starting with `v1.`) it uses full JWT SSO rather than guest embedding.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-react-sdk-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-react-sdk-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-react-sdk-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metabase/agent-skills metabase-react-sdk-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-react-sdk-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills --path skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-react-sdk-setup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/metabase-react-sdk-setup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- embed a Metabase dashboard inside a React app
- create an admin API key and keep it out of the repo
- detect the edition and version of a Metabase instance
- sign JWTs on the server for SSO
- generate an X-ray dashboard from a table and save it

## Example prompts
- Set up the Metabase React SDK in this project
- Detect my Metabase version and show me dashboards I can embed
- Help me set up JWT SSO and install @metabase/embedding-sdk-react

Use this skill for any task involving `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react` — whether that's initial setup, embedding dashboards, theming, or plugins.

**Communication style**: Be concise. Do one step at a time. When asking the user for input, output only the question — do not explain upcoming steps, implementation details, or what you plan to do next. The user does not need a roadmap.

> **CRITICAL — YOU MUST GET AN API KEY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE**
>
> Step 1 asks the user for a Metabase URL and API key. You CANNOT proceed without both.
> Do NOT detect the Metabase version, fetch `llms.txt`, install packages, or write ANY code until the user has given you an API key.
> Do NOT attempt to call any Metabase API endpoint without an API key — it will return 401 and you will be guessing.
> If any Metabase API call returns 401, STOP everything and ask the user for an API key.

## Step 1 — Get the Metabase URL and API key

You need a Metabase instance URL and an admin API key before anything else.

**`.env.metabase` is only for admin tasks within this skill** (API calls to Metabase). It is NOT the app's runtime config. Never import, read, or reference `.env.metabase` from the user's application code or build config. The app's instance URL goes in the user's own `.env` file (e.g., `VITE_METABASE_URL`, `NEXT_PUBLIC_METABASE_URL`) — set that up in Step 4.

Check if `.env.metabase` exists in the project root and already has both `METABASE_INSTANCE_URL` (non-empty) and `METABASE_ADMIN_API_KEY` (non-empty). If so, skip to Step 2.

Otherwise, create the file and gitignore it:

```bash
grep -qxF '.env.metabase' .gitignore 2>/dev/null || echo '.env.metabase' >> .gitignore
printf 'METABASE_INSTANCE_URL=\nMETABASE_ADMIN_API_KEY=\n' > .env.metabase
```

Then output **only this message** — no preamble, no explanation of what comes next, no implementation details:

> I created `.env.metabase` in the project root. Please fill in both values:
>
> 1. Set `METABASE_INSTANCE_URL` to your Metabase URL (e.g. `http://localhost:3000`)
> 2. Open `{your URL}/admin/settings/authentication/api-keys`, create a new API key
