## What it does

This skill handles version upgrades for Metabase embedding in a project. It covers the React SDK `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react` (v52+) and Modular embedding through `embed.js` (v56+). Reach for it when `package.json` still pins an older release and the codebase has calls that changed shape since.

The workflow follows a fixed contract: a plan checklist first, then a project scan, a type diff, a change catalog and per-file migration. Two scripts, `prepare.sh` and `read-sources.sh`, assemble the reference material — they unpack both package versions, pull the `.d.ts` files and the changelog. Because embed.js ships no npm types, the skill instead fetches version docs from `https://www.metabase.com/docs/v0.{VERSION}/llms-embedding-full.txt`. Any step that cannot be finished gets marked blocked, and the run stops there.

The current version comes from `package.json`; the target is either what you name or what `npm view` returns. The package manager is picked from the lock file — `yarn.lock`, `pnpm-lock.yaml` or `package-lock.json`. With embed.js the embedding version tracks the Metabase instance version, so you have to supply it yourself. Moving between different embedding technologies is outside what this skill does.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metabase/agent-skills metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills --path skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-version-upgrade/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bump `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react` to a newer release without reading every changelog entry by hand
- locate every place in the codebase that touches SDK components and callbacks
- compare `.d.ts` types across two versions and spot the breaking differences
- repair embed.js calls after a Metabase instance upgrade
- run a typecheck once the migration is applied and catch what broke

## Example prompts
- Upgrade the Metabase embedding SDK to the latest version
- Take `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react` from 52 to 58 and fix the code
- Migrate this project to the new embed.js version

## Execution contract

Follow the workflow steps in order — do not skip any step. Create the checklist first, then execute each step and explicitly mark it done with evidence. Each step's output feeds into the next, so skipping steps produces wrong migrations.

If you cannot complete a step due to missing info or tool failure, you must:

1. record the step as ❌ blocked,
2. explain exactly what is missing / what failed,
3. stop (do not proceed to later steps).

### Required output structure

Your response should contain these sections in this order:

1. **Step 0: Upgrade Plan Checklist**
2. **Step 1 Results: Project Scan**
3. **Step 2 Results: d.ts Diff / Target Docs** (primary or fallback)
4. **Step 3: Change Catalog**
5. **Step 4: Per-File Migration** (one subsection per file)
6. **Step 5: Typecheck Validation**
7. **Step 6: Final Summary**

Each step section should end with a status line:

- `Status: ✅ complete` or `Status: ❌ blocked`

### Evidence requirements

- Step 1: list every matched file path and the matching grep lines (SDK imports or Modular embedding API calls/script tags). Full file analysis happens in Step 4.
- Step 2 (primary path): show the diff output between d.ts files. (hybrid/fallback path): list each fetched URL + confirm files are loaded in context. Do not analyze or resolve types here — that's Step 3's job.
- Step 3: the structured change catalog — every changed/removed/added symbol with its fully resolved concrete type.
