## What it does

This skill scans a React codebase for `<metabase-dashboard>`, `<metabase-question>`, `<metabase-browser>`, `window.metabaseConfig`, and the `/app/embed.js` script. It maps the web components to SDK React components, adds `MetabaseProvider`, converts HTML attributes to React props, and removes the old setup.

The workflow checks React, Metabase, and SDK versions, reads the target SDK types, builds a file-by-file migration plan, applies the edits, and runs type checking. It is scoped to React projects that use Modular embedding web components. iframe-based projects and non-React apps are outside its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install metabase/agent-skills metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills --path skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add metabase/agent-skills --skill metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/metabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/metabase-modular-embedding-to-modular-embedding-sdk-upgrade/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move Metabase web components into the React SDK
- place `MetabaseProvider` in the component tree
- convert `window.metabaseConfig` into provider configuration
- remove the `/app/embed.js` script tag
- run type checking after the migration

## Example prompts
- Migrate this React project from Metabase Modular embedding to `@metabase/embedding-sdk-react`.
- Find every `<metabase-dashboard>` and `<metabase-question>`, map each one to the SDK, and apply the changes step by step.
- Run the type check after the migration and do not print any key or token values.

description: Migrates a React project from Metabase Modular embedding (embed.js web components) to the Modular embedding SDK (@metabase/embedding-sdk-react). Use when the user wants to switch from embed.js web components to React SDK components (MetabaseProvider). This is not a version upgrade — it changes the embedding technology.

## Execution contract

Follow the workflow steps in order — do not skip any step. Create the checklist first, then execute each step and explicitly mark it done with evidence. Each step's output feeds into the next, so skipping steps produces wrong migrations.

If you cannot complete a step due to missing info or tool failure, you must:

1. record the step as ❌ blocked,
2. explain exactly what is missing / what failed,
3. stop (do not proceed to later steps).

### Required output structure

Your response should contain these sections in this order:

1. **Step 0: Prerequisites Check**
2. **Step 0.1: Migration Plan Checklist**
3. **Step 1: Project Scan**
4. **Step 2: Target SDK API**
5. **Step 3: Migration Mapping**
6. **Step 4: Applied Code Changes**
7. **Step 5: Typecheck Validation**
8. **Step 6: Final Summary**

Each step section should end with a status line:

- `Status: ✅ complete` or `Status: ❌ blocked`

### Evidence requirements

- Step 0: React detected (dependency + version), Metabase instance version, target SDK version, package manager.
- Step 1: every file with Modular embedding usage (web components, metabaseConfig, embed.js script tag), with matching grep lines.
- Step 2: confirm d.ts loaded in context. List exported components, their props, and the MetabaseProvider config type.
- Step 3: the structured migration mapping — every web component → React component with prop conversions, auth config mapping, and embed.js removal plan.
- Step 4: per file — what was changed and exact diffs applied.
- Step 5: the exact typecheck command run and error summary if any remain.
