# mesh-generation

Works out cell spacing from physics scales and checks cell quality before you run the solver. Handy when convergence stalls or you need a point count across an interface.

## What it does

This skill covers two jobs: picking a mesh resolution and judging how good the resulting cells are. Feed it a physical scale — interface width, boundary-layer thickness, wavelength, diffusion length — and it turns that into a spacing `dx`. From there it reports cell counts per dimension for 1D, 2D and 3D domains.

Two scripts do the work. `scripts/grid_sizing.py` returns `dx` plus per-dimension counts; `scripts/mesh_quality.py` returns aspect ratio, size anisotropy and quality flags. Both print JSON split into `inputs` and `results`. Validation failures go to stderr and the process exits with code `2`. Python 3.10+ is required, and nothing outside the standard library is pulled in.

One catch worth knowing. `mesh_quality.py` derives everything from axis-aligned spacings `dx/dy/dz`, and those describe orthogonal cells whose interior angles are all 90°. So `skewness` comes back as `0.0` every time and `high_skewness` never fires. Elongation shows up through `aspect_ratio` and `size_anisotropy` instead. Real skewness has to come from actual cell-corner geometry, which means unstructured meshes need a separate check.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill mesh-generation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mesh-generation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mesh-generation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill mesh-generation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mesh-generation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill mesh-generation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mesh-generation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills mesh-generation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mesh-generation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HeshamFS/materials-simulation-skills --skill mesh-generation -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
## When to use it
- size a mesh from interface width or boundary-layer thickness
- trace poor solver convergence back to cell quality
- pick between structured, unstructured and AMR approaches
- estimate cell counts per dimension for 1D, 2D or 3D domains
- set up a mesh convergence study
## Example prompts
- Compute grid sizing for a 1 mm domain at 200 points
- Check mesh quality for a cell with `dx 1.0`, `dy 0.5`, `dz 0.5`
- How many points do I need across a 10 μm interface?
# Mesh Generation
## Goal
Provide a consistent workflow for selecting mesh resolution and checking mesh quality for PDE simulations.
## Requirements
- Python 3.10+
- No external dependencies (uses stdlib)
## Inputs to Gather
| Input | Description | Example |
|-------|-------------|---------|
| Domain size | Physical dimensions | `1.0 × 1.0 m` |
| Feature size | Smallest feature to resolve | `0.01 m` |
| Points per feature | Resolution requirement | `10 points` |
| Aspect ratio limit | Maximum dx/dy ratio | `5:1` |
| Quality threshold | Skewness limit | `< 0.8` |
## Decision Guidance
### Resolution Selection
```
What is the smallest feature size?
├── Interface width → dx ≤ width / 5
├── Boundary layer → dx ≤ layer_thickness / 10
├── Wave length → dx ≤ lambda / 20
