# mermaid-diagram-generator

This skill writes Mermaid diagrams into markdown: flowcharts, sequence diagrams, ERDs, state machines and class diagrams. Handy when docs need a request flow or a schema picture.

## What it does

The skill lays out a five-step workflow: pick the diagram type, define nodes and connections, apply styling, optionally add click handlers, then embed the result in markdown. Each diagram type comes with worked syntax examples.

Flowcharts get node shapes, subgraphs and colouring through `style` and `classDef`. Sequence diagrams cover autonumbering, `loop` and `alt` blocks, notes and activations. There are also ERDs with relationships and field types, state machines with composite states, and TypeScript class diagrams.

It installs across six platforms, Claude, Codex and Cursor among them. There is nothing to configure: the skill is just instructions for the agent, and whatever renders your markdown draws the diagram. If your viewer has no Mermaid support, you will see the raw block instead — worth checking before you commit a doc full of them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill mermaid-diagram-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill mermaid-diagram-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill mermaid-diagram-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills mermaid-diagram-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill mermaid-diagram-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path foundation/mermaid-diagram-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill mermaid-diagram-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills/tree/HEAD/foundation/mermaid-diagram-generator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draw an auth flow into project docs
- map a database schema with table relationships
- show message passing between services
- document order status transitions
- turn TypeScript classes into a class diagram

## Example prompts
- create a mermaid diagram of the signup flow
- draw an ERD for the users, orders and products tables
- show a sequence diagram of order processing with a queue

# Mermaid Diagram Generator

Create clear, maintainable diagrams using Mermaid syntax in markdown.

## Core Workflow

1. **Identify diagram type**: Flow, sequence, ERD, etc.
2. **Define elements**: Nodes, connections, labels
3. **Apply styling**: Colors, shapes, directions
4. **Add interactions**: Click handlers (optional)
5. **Embed in docs**: Markdown integration

## Flowchart Diagrams

### Basic Flowchart

```mermaid
flowchart TD
    A[Start] --> B{Is user logged in?}
    B -->|Yes| C[Show Dashboard]
    B -->|No| D[Show Login Page]
    D --> E[Enter Credentials]
    E --> F{Valid credentials?}
    F -->|Yes| C
    F -->|No| G[Show Error]
    G --> D
    C --> H[End]
```

### Node Shapes

```mermaid
flowchart LR
    A[Rectangle] --> B(Rounded)
    B --> C([Stadium])
    C --> D[[Subroutine]]
    D --> E[(Database)]
    E --> F((Circle))
    F --> G>Asymmetric]
    G --> H{Diamond}
    H --> I{{Hexagon}}
    I --> J[/Parallelogram/]
    J --> K[\Parallelogram Alt\]
    K --> L[/Trapezoid\]
    L --> M[\Trapezoid Alt/]
```

### Subgraphs

```mermaid
flowchart TB
    subgraph Frontend
        A[React App] --> B[Redux Store]
        B --> C[Components]
    end
    subgraph Backend
        D[API Gateway] --> E[Auth Service]
        D --> F[User Service]
        D --> G[Order Service]
    end
    subgraph Database
        H[(PostgreSQL)]
        I[(Redis Cache)]
    end
    C --> D
    E --> H
    F --> H
    G --> H
    E --> I
```

### Styled Flowchart

```mermaid
flowchart TD
    A[Request] --> B{Rate Limited?}
    B -->|Yes| C[429 Too Many Requests]
    B -->|No| D{Authenticated?}
    D -->|No| E[401 Unauthorized]
    D -->|Yes| F{Authorized?}
    F -->|No| G[403 Forbidden]
    F -->|Yes| H[Process Request]
    H --> I[200 OK]
    style A fill:#e1f5fe
    style I fill:#c8e6c9
    style C fill:#ffcdd2
    style E fill:#ffcdd2
    style G fill:#ffcdd2
    classDef error fill:#ffcdd2,stroke:#c62828
    classDef success fill:#c8e6c9,stroke:#2e7d32
    class C,E,G error
    class I success
```

## Sequence Diagrams

### API Request Flow

```mermaid
sequenceDiagram
    autonumber
    actor User
    participant Client
    participant API
    participant Auth
    participant DB
    User->>Client: Click Login
    Client->>API: POST /auth/login
    API->>Auth: Validate credentials
    Auth->>DB: Query user
    DB-->>Auth: User data
    Auth-->>API: JWT token
    API-->>Client: 200 OK + token
    Client->>Client: Store token
