A skill for profiling application memory, finding leaks and cutting the footprint. Useful when a process keeps growing or dies with out of memory.

## What it does

The skill walks through where memory goes in your app and what to do about it. It ships four guides under `references/`: memory profiling, leak detection, optimization techniques, and monitoring with targets.

The quick start covers browser profiling with `performance.memory`, recording an interaction in React DevTools Profiler, taking a heap snapshot in Chrome DevTools, and running Node.js with `node --inspect`. From there the agent works through those steps with you.

It targets high memory usage, suspected leaks, slow performance and out of memory crashes. If you have no DevTools or profiler access in the environment where the process runs, half the steps go nowhere — worth checking what you can actually profile before you start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill memory-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/memory-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill memory-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill memory-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts memory-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill memory-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/memory-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill memory-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/memory-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- track down a leak in a long-running process
- take a heap snapshot and diff it before and after a scenario
- shrink memory usage before scaling up
- figure out why the app crashes with out of memory
- set up memory monitoring with target thresholds

## Example prompts
- profile memory in this Node.js app and find the leak
- diff heap snapshots before and after the test run and show what stays retained
- suggest ways to cut memory usage in this service

## Overview

Memory optimization improves application performance, stability, and reduces infrastructure costs. Efficient memory usage is critical for scalability.

## When to Use

- High memory usage
- Memory leaks suspected
- Slow performance
- Out of memory crashes
- Scaling challenges

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```javascript
// Browser memory profiling
// Check memory usage
performance.memory: {
  jsHeapSizeLimit: 2190000000,    // Max available
  totalJSHeapSize: 1300000000,    // Total allocated
  usedJSHeapSize: 950000000       // Currently used
}
// React DevTools Profiler
- Open React DevTools → Profiler
- Record interaction
- See component renders and time
- Identify unnecessary renders
// Chrome DevTools
1. Open DevTools → Memory
2. Take heap snapshot
3. Compare before/after
4. Look for retained objects
5. Check retained sizes
// Node.js profiling
node --inspect app.js
// Open chrome://inspect
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Follow established patterns and conventions
- Write clean, maintainable code
- Add appropriate documentation
- Test thoroughly before deploying

### ❌ DON'T

- Skip testing or validation
- Ignore error handling
- Hard-code configuration values
