## What it does

The skill tells your agent which Volatility plugins to run and in what order. It walks from OS identification through process listing, network connections, loaded DLLs and injection hunting with `malfind`. Then it moves to hashes, file carving and registry analysis.

A comparison table maps Volatility 2 commands to their Volatility 3 counterparts: `pslist` against `windows.pslist`, `netscan` against `windows.netscan`, `hashdump` against `windows.hashdump`. Linux gets its own section with `linux.bash`, `linux.check_afinfo` and `linux.check_syscall`. A `VOLATILITY_CHEATSHEET.md` file sits alongside for common plugin sequences.

The skill points to neighbouring ones: `traffic-analysis-pcap` for correlating network artifacts, `steganography-techniques` for hidden data, `windows-privilege-escalation` for post-exploitation traces. Volatility 2 installs with `pip2`, Volatility 3 with `pip3`. You still need the dump itself — LiME on Linux, WinPmem on Windows.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill memory-forensics-volatility -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill memory-forensics-volatility -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill memory-forensics-volatility -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yaklang/hack-skills memory-forensics-volatility
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill memory-forensics-volatility -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills --path skills/memory-forensics-volatility
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill memory-forensics-volatility -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/memory-forensics-volatility/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find a process hidden via DKOM by diffing `pslist` and `psscan`
- pull hashes and LSA secrets out of a memory dump
- catch code injection through `PAGE_EXECUTE_READWRITE` regions
- build an incident timeline from memory artifacts
- check a Linux box for rootkits with `check_afinfo` and `check_syscall`

## Example prompts
- analyze the mem.raw dump, start with OS identification and the process list
- diff pslist and psscan and show processes missing from the linked list
- extract hashes and LSA secrets from the dump and build a timeline

# SKILL: Memory Forensics — Expert Analysis Playbook

> **AI LOAD INSTRUCTION**: Expert memory forensics techniques using Volatility 2 and 3. Covers memory acquisition, OS identification, process analysis (hidden process detection), network connections, DLL/module analysis, code injection detection (malfind), credential extraction, file carving, registry analysis, and timeline generation. Base models miss the Vol2/Vol3 command differences, malware indicator patterns, and Linux-specific memory analysis.

## 0. RELATED ROUTING

Before going deep, consider loading:

- [traffic-analysis-pcap](../traffic-analysis-pcap/SKILL.md) for correlating network artifacts with memory findings
- [steganography-techniques](../steganography-techniques/SKILL.md) if hidden data suspected in extracted files
- [windows-privilege-escalation](../windows-privilege-escalation/SKILL.md) for understanding post-exploitation artifacts in memory

### Quick Reference

Also load [VOLATILITY_CHEATSHEET.md](./VOLATILITY_CHEATSHEET.md) when you need:

## 1. MEMORY ACQUISITION

### Linux

```bash
# LiME (Linux Memory Extractor) — kernel module
insmod lime.ko "path=/tmp/mem.lime format=lime"
# /proc/kcore (if available)
dd if=/proc/kcore of=/tmp/mem.raw bs=1M
# AVML (Microsoft's open-source)
./avml /tmp/mem.lime
```

### Windows

```bash
# WinPmem
winpmem_mini_x64.exe memdump.raw
# FTK Imager (GUI) — capture memory to file
# DumpIt (single-click memory dump)
DumpIt.exe
# Comae (MagnetRAM)
MagnetRAMCapture.exe /output memdump.raw
```

### Virtual Machines

```bash
# VMware: .vmem file in VM directory (suspend VM first)
# VirtualBox: VBoxManage debugvm "VM_NAME" dumpvmcore --filename mem.raw
# KVM/QEMU: virsh dump DOMAIN memdump --memory-only
# Hyper-V: checkpoint VM → inspect .bin files
```

## 2. VOLATILITY 2 vs 3

| Concept | Volatility 2 | Volatility 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Profile system | `--profile=Win10x64_19041` | Auto-detected (symbol tables) |
| Image info | `imageinfo` | `windows.info` / `linux.info` |
| Process list | `pslist` | `windows.pslist` |
| Network | `netscan` / `connections` | `windows.netscan` / `windows.netstat` |
