## What it does

The skill runs the analysis in four phases. First you document what actually hooks the audience: the emotional arc, peak moments, who holds power, how the central tension is built. Then elements get sorted into three buckets — universal ones that transfer directly, setting-dependent ones that need an equivalent, and culture-bound ones that have to be replaced outright.

Phase three is systemic translation: what pressures exist in the new world, where authority comes from, what keeps the conflict from resolving. The last phase checks consistency and originality, including whether you dragged in problematic assumptions along with the structure. There is a translation table for authority, resources, communication and enforcement, plus a worked example moving a police procedural into interplanetary corporate territory.

The guiding rule is transform, don't transplant. That means the skill asks you to understand why a device works before you rebuild it somewhere else — skip that and you get new scenery over the same old story. It is an analysis tool for writers, not a prose generator.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill media-adaptation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/media-adaptation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/media-adaptation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill media-adaptation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/media-adaptation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill media-adaptation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/media-adaptation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills media-adaptation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/media-adaptation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill media-adaptation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/creative/fiction/application/media-adaptation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/media-adaptation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill media-adaptation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/creative/fiction/application/media-adaptation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- figure out why a show holds viewers
- move a police procedural into a space setting
- tell a universal device from a culture-bound one
- invent an equivalent power structure for a new world
- check whether your draft reads as derivative

## Example prompts
- Run media-adaptation on this series and pull out the transferable elements
- Translate the conflict structure of this show into an orbital corporate setting
- Use media-adaptation to check my world for imported cultural assumptions

# Media Adaptation

## Purpose

Systematically analyze existing media (TV, film, games, etc.) to extract transferable elements that can be authentically transformed for new settings, particularly science fiction. Captures what makes originals compelling while creating genuinely new works rather than superficial reskins.

## Core Principle

**Transform, don't transplant.** The goal is to understand WHY something works and recreate that function in a new context, not to simply change surface details.

---

## Phase 1: Core Appeal Identification

### Emotional Experience Analysis

**Questions:**
- What emotional journey does the audience take?
- What specific moments create the strongest response?
- What underlying fears or desires does this tap into?
- How does tension build and release throughout?

**Document:**
- Primary emotional arc
- Peak emotional moments
- Underlying psychological appeal
- Tension/release pattern

### Power Dynamic Analysis

**Questions:**
- Who has power and why?
- What creates vulnerability in the system?
- How do underdogs gain agency?
- What institutional pressures shape behavior?

**Document:**
- Power sources
- System vulnerabilities
- Agency mechanisms
- Institutional pressures

### Conflict Architecture

**Questions:**
- What creates the central tension?
- How do individual goals conflict with systemic demands?
- What makes resolution difficult but not impossible?
- Where do moral complexities emerge?

**Document:**
- Central tension structure
- Individual vs. system conflicts
- Resolution barriers
- Moral complexity sources

---

## Phase 2: Element Classification

### Universal Elements (Direct Transfer)

Elements that work across any setting because they tap into fundamental human nature:

**Emotional Universals:**
- Fear of the unknown
- Desire for justice/fairness
- Need for belonging/community
- Drive for competence/mastery
- Search for meaning/purpose

**Relationship Dynamics:**
- Mentor/apprentice bonds
- Unlikely partnerships
- Family loyalty vs. duty conflicts
- Trust building through shared adversity
- Betrayal and redemption arcs

**Structural Tensions:**
- Individual agency vs. institutional control
