Defines and tracks UX metrics, experimentation frameworks, and counter-metrics. It helps teams connect design work to verifiable outcomes without metric gaming.

## What it does

Part of the Intent design system, measure links product decisions to observable evidence. Every chosen number shapes behavior. If you optimize for conversion alone, dark patterns follow quickly. This skill guards against manipulation by pairing primary metrics with counter-metrics. When signups jump, support tickets must not spike unnoticed.

The workflow builds on Google's HEART framework and the Goal-Signal-Metric model. Instead of tracking everything, it prompts you to select two or three relevant dimensions per feature. It also pairs with other Intent skills, tying strategic bets from `/strategize` to measurable thresholds and pairing quantitative metrics with research from `/investigate`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill measure -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/measure/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/measure/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill measure -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/measure/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill measure -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/measure/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ghaida/intent measure
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/measure/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill measure -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ghaida/intent --path skills/measure
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/measure/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill measure -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ghaida/intent/tree/HEAD/skills/measure/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- select UX metrics using Google's HEART framework
- map design intentions to quantifiable signals through GSM
- establish counter-metrics to prevent dark patterns
- define measurable success criteria for feature experiments

## Example prompts
- Define success metrics and counter-metrics for our new onboarding flow
- Map our checkout redesign goals to observable signals using GSM
- The dashboard numbers look good but users are complaining, review our metrics

# Measure — Define and Track Success

## Overview

If you can't define success, you can't design for it. And if you measure the wrong thing, you'll optimize for the wrong outcome.

UX measurement connects design decisions to observable evidence — did the thing we built actually help? This skill defines what to measure, how to measure it, and how to make decisions from what you learn. It bridges the gap between "we shipped it" and "it worked."

But measurement is not neutral. Every metric you choose shapes what gets optimized. Measure time-on-site and you'll get infinite scroll. Measure clicks and you'll get clickbait. Measure conversion and you'll get dark patterns — unless you also measure what those metrics cost the user. This skill guards against measurement becoming manipulation, ensuring that metrics incentivize genuine value, not engineered engagement.

**When to activate this skill:** Defining success criteria for a new feature, designing experiments, building measurement frameworks, analyzing funnel performance, reviewing whether existing metrics are measuring the right things, or anytime "the numbers look good" but the experience feels wrong.

## Skill family

Measure works alongside the full Intent skill system:

- **`/strategize`**: Their hypotheses need measurable success criteria. Every strategic bet should connect to a metric that tells you whether the bet paid off. `/strategize` states the hypothesis; `/measure` defines when it is true. When metrics contradict a strategic assumption, measure loops back to reopen strategy — with guardrails (see "When measurement points back to strategy" below).
- **`/investigate`**: Qualitative research complements quantitative measurement. When the numbers say users drop off at step 3, investigate tells you why. When satisfaction scores drop after a redesign, investigate interviews users to understand the experience behind the number. Never make major design decisions from metrics alone.
- **`/evaluate`**: UX assessment produces scores and findings that inform what to measure. Evaluation identifies usability issues; measurement tracks whether fixes actually resolved them.
- **`/specify`**: packages the design for the build; the measurement framework rides in the package when the project made one, so the builder can instrument what success looks like.
