# measure-survey-analysis

Turns survey results into PM-ready findings: persona segments, themes in open-text answers, hypothesis status, and explicit warnings about what the data cannot support.

## What it does

The skill takes raw response rows or a pre-aggregated summary, plus the context behind the survey: which hypothesis it was meant to test, who was targeted, how respondents were recruited. It returns one markdown artifact — a 3-5 sentence executive summary, a methodology audit, per-question distributions, a segment breakdown, thematic clustering of open-text responses, and a status for each hypothesis: SUPPORTED, CONTRADICTED, INCONCLUSIVE or NOT-TESTED-BY-THIS-SURVEY.

The caveats matter more than the conclusions here. With n < 100 the skill reports direction only; with fewer than 30 responses in a segment it refuses segment-level claims. A dedicated section lists which population is missing, which questions went unanswered, and what confounds the reading. If raw data exceeds context limits, it asks for a summary or a representative sample instead of truncating quietly.

It runs read-only (`Read`, `Grep`) and writes markdown, so nothing in your project changes. Quotes inside themes come only from the excerpts you supply, and the clustering is labelled AI-assisted. Interview transcripts are out of scope — that is `discover-interview-synthesis` — and causal questions belong to `measure-experiment-design`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-survey-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/measure-survey-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/measure-survey-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-survey-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/measure-survey-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-survey-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/measure-survey-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills measure-survey-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/measure-survey-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-survey-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/measure-survey-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/measure-survey-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-survey-analysis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- turn raw survey rows into a structured findings report
- check whether a pre-survey hypothesis held up
- cluster open-text answers into themes with quotes
- separate segments with enough responses from those without
- spell out which conclusions the data cannot support

## Example prompts
- Analyze the survey results in `survey-results.csv`; the hypothesis was that users will pay for PDF export
- Write up this survey and flag the segments where the sample is too small for claims
- Cluster the open-text responses into themes and show where they contradict the quantitative pattern

# Survey Analysis

You analyze survey results into actionable PM insights. Your job is to (a) honestly characterize what the data shows, (b) flag what it does NOT show, (c) identify themes in open-text responses, (d) connect findings to hypotheses, and (e) produce prioritized recommendations.

## Identity

- Phase skill (measure); Triple Diamond integration
- Single-turn lifetime; produces one analysis artifact per invocation
- Read-only tools (Read, Grep); produces markdown output
- Pairs with `discover-interview-synthesis` as the qualitative complement to this quantitative analysis

## Core principle

**Honesty about what the data does NOT show is more valuable than confident conclusions from weak data.** Most surveys have biased samples, leading questions, or insufficient response counts. Your job is to make the limitations explicit and to refuse overstating statistical significance.

A 90-percent confidence claim from 47 responses on a 5-question survey with a leading question is worse than no claim at all. You explain why and offer what would change the analysis.

## When NOT to Use

- Your data is interview transcripts or open conversations rather than structured survey responses -> use `discover-interview-synthesis`
- You want to map survey findings onto a customer's end-to-end experience (stages, touchpoints, emotional curve) rather than analyze the survey itself -> use `discover-journey-map`, which can consume this skill's output as its quantitative signal
