## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a fixed order: state the questions the data must answer, list the events, pin down triggers, then properties with types and example values, user-level attributes, and a PII section. Output follows the template in `references/TEMPLATE.md` and fills Overview, Event Inventory, User Properties, PII & Privacy Considerations, Implementation Notes and Testing Checklist. A finished example sits in `references/EXAMPLE.md`.

One section covers traces. When a feature captures model input or output, retrieval context, or a tool call, the skill asks you to name the data classes, decide what is dropped before the trace leaves the process and separately before it is stored, say who can read traces and whether reads are logged, set retention and deletion, and work out how a deletion request reaches a trace copied into an evaluation set. The trigger is capture itself, not who typed the text.

It is the wrong tool when you need the dashboard built on those events — that is `measure-dashboard-requirements`. If the feature has no flows yet, run `deliver-prd` first. Auditing data you already collect is a different job too.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-instrumentation-spec -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-instrumentation-spec -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-instrumentation-spec -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills measure-instrumentation-spec
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-instrumentation-spec -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/measure-instrumentation-spec
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill measure-instrumentation-spec -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/measure-instrumentation-spec/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lock down analytics events before engineers write the feature
- separate a button click from a successful form submit in the trigger wording
- attach data types and example values to every property
- flag properties holding personal data and decide how to handle them
- audit existing tracking for gaps and naming drift

## Example prompts
- Write an instrumentation spec for the new checkout feature: events, triggers, properties
- Audit the current onboarding tracking and show which events are missing
- Describe which data classes land in traces and what gets dropped before storage

# Instrumentation Spec

An instrumentation spec defines what analytics events to track, when to fire them, and what properties to include. It serves as a contract between product and engineering, ensuring consistent data collection that enables accurate measurement. Good instrumentation specs prevent the "we can't answer that question because we didn't track it" problem.

## When to Use

- Before engineering implements a new feature
- When defining analytics requirements for experiments
- When auditing existing tracking for gaps or inconsistencies
- When onboarding a new analytics tool
- Before launch to ensure measurement is in place

## When NOT to Use

- You are specifying the dashboard built on top of the events -> use `measure-dashboard-requirements`
- You need experiment-specific metrics and variants, not product-wide tracking -> use `measure-experiment-design`
- The feature itself is not yet specified (no flows to instrument) -> use `deliver-prd` first
- You are analyzing data you already collect -> use `measure-experiment-results` or `measure-survey-analysis`

## Instructions

When asked to create an instrumentation spec, follow these steps:

1. **Define Analytics Goals**
   Start with the questions you need to answer. What will you measure? What decisions will this data inform? This prevents over-instrumentation while ensuring nothing important is missed.

2. **Identify Events to Track**
