## What it does

mcp2cli turns an MCP server, OpenAPI specification, or GraphQL API into command-line commands at runtime. An agent can list operations with `--list`, filter them with `--search`, inspect arguments through `--help`, and run a selected operation with flags.

It accepts HTTP/SSE MCP, stdio MCP, local or remote OpenAPI JSON or YAML files, and GraphQL endpoints. Every run requires exactly one source flag: `--mcp`, `--mcp-stdio`, `--spec`, or `--graphql`. Pick the source protocol first, because those flags are mutually exclusive.

Authentication headers can read secrets from an environment variable or file through `env:` and `file:`. The CLI also includes OAuth for HTTP MCP, transport selection, caching, sessions, and saved connections with `bake`. Run it directly with `uvx mcp2cli --help`, or install it using `pip install mcp2cli`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --skill mcp2cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mcp2cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --skill mcp2cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --skill mcp2cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install knowsuchagency/mcp2cli mcp2cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --skill mcp2cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --path skills/mcp2cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add knowsuchagency/mcp2cli --skill mcp2cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/knowsuchagency/mcp2cli/tree/HEAD/skills/mcp2cli/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- list tools exposed by an MCP server
- find an operation in an OpenAPI specification
- run a GraphQL query with arguments
- read an API secret from an environment variable
- save connection settings as a named tool

## Example prompts
- Connect to this MCP server over stdio and list its tools.
- Inspect `./openapi.json` and find the operation that creates a record.
- Run a GraphQL users query with a result limit.

name: mcp2cli
description: Turn any MCP server, OpenAPI spec, or GraphQL endpoint into a CLI. Use this skill when the user wants to interact with an MCP server, OpenAPI/REST API, or GraphQL API via command line, discover available tools/endpoints, call API operations, or generate a new skill from an API. Triggers include "mcp2cli", "call this MCP server", "use this API", "list tools from", "create a skill for this API", "graphql", or any task involving MCP tool invocation, OpenAPI endpoint calls, or GraphQL queries without writing code.

# mcp2cli

Turn any MCP server, OpenAPI spec, or GraphQL endpoint into a CLI at runtime. No codegen.

## Install

```bash
# Run directly (no install needed)
uvx mcp2cli --help
# Or install
pip install mcp2cli
```

## Core Workflow

1. **Connect** to a source (MCP server, OpenAPI spec, or GraphQL endpoint)
2. **Discover** available commands with `--list` (or filter with `--search`)
3. **Inspect** a specific command with `<command> --help`
4. **Execute** the command with flags

```bash
# MCP over HTTP
mcp2cli --mcp https://mcp.example.com/sse --list
mcp2cli --mcp https://mcp.example.com/sse create-task --help
mcp2cli --mcp https://mcp.example.com/sse create-task --title "Fix bug"
# MCP over stdio
mcp2cli --mcp-stdio "npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /tmp" --list
mcp2cli --mcp-stdio "npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /tmp" read-file --path /tmp/hello.txt
# OpenAPI spec (remote or local, JSON or YAML)
mcp2cli --spec https://petstore3.swagger.io/api/v3/openapi.json --list
mcp2cli --spec ./openapi.json --base-url https://api.example.com list-pets --status available
# GraphQL endpoint
mcp2cli --graphql https://api.example.com/graphql --list
mcp2cli --graphql https://api.example.com/graphql users --limit 10
mcp2cli --graphql https://api.example.com/graphql create-user --name "Alice"
```
