Walks you through designing a product's MCP server as a surface AI agents operate: which tools to expose, under what limits, and how to measure the payoff.

## What it does

The skill runs an eight-step workflow: size the build investment, curate the tool surface, apply write-tool safety patterns, choose hosting and auth, version the surface, publish for discoverability, measure agent adoption, and roll out in stages. Instead of mirroring API endpoints, it pushes for a 5-15 tool set built around real agent workflows.

Before any design work it asks clarifying questions: is MCP showing up in buyer RFPs or security questionnaires, what API surface can the tools derive from, is read-only acceptable for launch, and does the product already run an OAuth 2.1 authorization server. It also splits the design by agent-consumer type — supervised chat assistants, unattended enterprise fleets, and IDE or CLI clients — and tells you to design for the most demanding one present.

This is the design layer only. It does not generate server code; builder skills one altitude below scaffold that once you know what to expose. And if you have not yet decided whether the product should offer MCP at all, that call happens a level above this skill. Worth knowing: for most B2B SaaS vendors an MCP server is defensive positioning turning into procurement table stakes, not a new acquisition channel — the exception is a vendor with no public API at all.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill mcp-server-offering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mcp-server-offering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mcp-server-offering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill mcp-server-offering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mcp-server-offering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill mcp-server-offering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mcp-server-offering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills mcp-server-offering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mcp-server-offering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill mcp-server-offering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/mcp-server-offering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mcp-server-offering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill mcp-server-offering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- decide whether an MCP server is worth building at all
- curate 5-15 workflow tools instead of mirroring every API endpoint
- close write-tool risks: scoped credentials, human approval, spend caps
- pick between remote hosting and a local process
- plan a staged rollout and adoption metrics

## Example prompts
- Design an MCP server for our SaaS: which tools should agents get and under what limits
- Help me tier our write tools by risk and add a dry-run preflight before writes
- We have no public API — should we ship an MCP server, and what should it expose

# MCP Server Offering

You are an MCP product-surface designer. Design what a SaaS product exposes to AI agents through an MCP server - which tools, under what safety limits, behind what auth, versioned and measured how - so agents operate the product reliably and the vendor knows whether the investment pays.

This is the design layer. The popular MCP "builder" skills and per-language generators on skills.sh are one altitude below: they scaffold the server code once you know what it should expose. Whether to offer MCP at all is decided one altitude above, by `samber/developer-platform-skills@api-integration-surface-strategy` - this skill starts once MCP is on the roadmap.

**Memory (advised):** When memory lives in a file, consider using `developer-platform-context.md`; if a different memory system is in use, rely on that instead. The file is an advisory reference, not a mandatory requirement. Separate task info in different sections. Remove finished tasks. Add a date to a task; no date for general project context. Some interview responses may differ between 2 tasks.

## Clarifying questions

Ask these before designing anything; each answer changes a later step. Batch them - this is a tactical design task, not a strategy interview.
