## What it does

Repeated MCP tool failures degrade session context and waste tokens in endless retry loops. This skill acts as a session-level guard with three states: `CLOSED`, `OPEN`, and `HALF-OPEN`. When an MCP tool fails three consecutive times on transient errors like `TIMEOUT` or `RATE_LIMIT`, it trips the circuit to `OPEN` and halts further executions.

Fatal issues do not wait for three strikes. Errors like `AUTH`, `NOT_FOUND`, and `ADMIN_GATED` trip the breaker on the first failure. The assistant immediately suggests workarounds — such as substituting built-in tools, using member-scoped REST API calls with personal access tokens, or skipping the step. After a 60-second cooldown, it enters `HALF-OPEN` to send a single probe call.

State history is saved to `.claude/mcp_circuit/circuit_log.yaml` so records persist across `/clear`. Enforcement relies on assistant behavioral protocol rather than a mechanical `PreToolUse` hook. Add `.claude/mcp_circuit/` to your `.gitignore` to avoid committing session logs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill mcp-circuit-breaker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill mcp-circuit-breaker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill mcp-circuit-breaker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrono-meta/forge-harness mcp-circuit-breaker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill mcp-circuit-breaker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness --path plugins/fh-commons/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mcp-circuit-breaker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill mcp-circuit-breaker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- stop cascading retry loops when an MCP server hangs
- find alternative REST endpoints or built-in tools during tool outages
- immediately halt calls on authorization failures and admin permission gates
- track session-level MCP failure patterns in a persistent log

## Example prompts
- /mcp-circuit-breaker
- MCP tool keeps erroring, inspect the connection
- Same tool error keeps happening, trip the breaker and find a fallback

# mcp-circuit-breaker — MCP Tool Failure Guard

MCP tools can fail silently or return partial results, leading to cascading retry loops that waste tokens and degrade session quality. This skill detects failure patterns, trips a circuit breaker to halt retries, proposes alternatives, and resets when the tool recovers.

> **Scope distinction**
> - Claude Code native retry: low-level transport retries (transparent, fast)
> - mcp-circuit-breaker: **session-level guard** — detects repeated semantic failures, intervenes before token waste compounds

---

## Triggers

- `/mcp-circuit-breaker`
- "MCP failing", "MCP keeps erroring", "tool isn't working", "circuit-breaker"
- "same error keeps happening", "tool call looping", "MCP timeout"
- Automatic: when the same MCP tool name appears in 3+ consecutive failed calls within a session

---

## Circuit States

```
CLOSED   → Normal operation (tool calls pass through)
OPEN     → Circuit tripped (calls blocked, alternatives proposed)
HALF-OPEN → Recovery probe (1 test call allowed, resets if success)
```

Default thresholds:
- **Trip threshold**: 3 consecutive failures of the same tool
- **Half-open probe**: after 60s cooldown (or explicit user command)
- **Reset**: 1 successful call in HALF-OPEN state → back to CLOSED

---

## Execution Steps

### Step 1. Detect Failure Pattern

Identify the failing tool and failure mode:

```bash
# MCP mounts live in SEVERAL scopes — check all that this shell can see. Project settings.json is
# usually NOT one of them (it commonly holds hooks only), so a single-file read renders "no config"
# on a session with live MCP servers — a wrong-location instrument, not a measurement.
for f in .mcp.json .claude/settings.json .claude/settings.local.json; do
  [ -e "$f" ] && { echo "== $f =="; grep -A5 '"mcpServers"' "$f" 2>/dev/null || echo "(present, no mcpServers key)"; }
done
[ -e ~/.claude.json ] && grep -c '"mcpServers"' ~/.claude.json | xargs echo "user-scope ~/.claude.json mcpServers blocks:"
```

An empty result above means **"no project/user-scope config found"** — never "no MCP mounted":
