## What it does

This skill walks through structuring a .NET MAUI app with Shell. It covers the `FlyoutItem`, `TabBar`, `Tab`, and `ShellContent` hierarchy in `AppShell.xaml`, plus route registration for pages outside that hierarchy. Transitions use `GoToAsync`, with guidance on passing parameters and handling back navigation.

The guide covers receiving values with `IQueryAttributable` and sending an object through `ShellNavigationQueryParameters`. It also explains navigation events and confirmation before leaving a page. Register a route before navigating to a page outside the visual hierarchy; otherwise, the app throws at runtime.

You’ll need a .NET MAUI project whose root shell is `AppShell.xaml`, along with `ContentPage` pages. This guidance is for Shell-based apps, not projects built around `NavigationPage` alone. External URL deep links and page data binding fall outside its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-shell-navigation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/maui-shell-navigation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/maui-shell-navigation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-shell-navigation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/maui-shell-navigation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-shell-navigation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/maui-shell-navigation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills maui-shell-navigation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/maui-shell-navigation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-shell-navigation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-maui/skills/maui-shell-navigation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/maui-shell-navigation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-shell-navigation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build tabs and a flyout menu in `AppShell.xaml`
- register a route for a detail page
- pass navigation parameters between pages
- ask for confirmation before navigating back

## Example prompts
- Set up Shell tabs and a flyout menu in my .NET MAUI project.
- Add a `GoToAsync` transition to the details page and register its route.
- Pass an object between pages and confirm before navigating back.

# .NET MAUI Shell Navigation

Implement page navigation in .NET MAUI apps using Shell. Shell provides URI-based navigation, a flyout menu, tab bars, and a four-level visual hierarchy — all configured declaratively in XAML.

## When to Use

- Setting up top-level app navigation with tabs or a flyout menu
- Navigating between pages programmatically with `GoToAsync`
- Passing data between pages via query parameters or object parameters
- Registering detail-page routes for push navigation
- Guarding navigation with confirmation dialogs (e.g., unsaved changes)
- Customizing back button behavior per page

## When Not to Use

- Deep linking from external URLs or app links — see [.NET MAUI deep linking docs](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/maui/fundamentals/app-links)
- Data binding on navigation target pages — use `maui-data-binding`
- Dependency injection for pages and view models — use `maui-dependency-injection`
- Apps using `NavigationPage` without Shell (different navigation API)

## Inputs

- A .NET MAUI project with `AppShell.xaml` as the root shell
- Pages (`ContentPage`) to navigate between
- Route names for detail pages not in the visual hierarchy

## Rules That Change the Answer

These are the Shell-specific decisions that are easy to get wrong. Apply them
whenever they are relevant to what the user asked.

| Situation | Do this | Not this |
|---|---|---|
| Declaring pages in `AppShell.xaml` | With `xmlns:views="clr-namespace:MyApp.Views"` declared: `<ShellContent ContentTemplate="{DataTemplate views:MyPage}" />` — the page is created on first navigation | `<ShellContent><views:MyPage /></ShellContent>`, which constructs **every** page at startup |
| Navigating to a page not in the visual hierarchy | `Routing.RegisterRoute("details", typeof(DetailsPage))` first | Calling `GoToAsync("details")` unregistered — it throws at runtime |
```
