## What it does

The skill hands the agent a working set of rules for XAML and C# bindings in .NET MAUI. The core is compiled bindings via `x:DataType`, which check types at build time instead of falling back to reflection. It also covers `INotifyPropertyChanged` and CommunityToolkit `ObservableObject`, value converters, `BindingMode` choices, `BindingContext`, relative bindings, `StringFormat` and `FallbackValue`.

You get a do-this / not-that table for the usual mistakes, plus a rundown of four binding warnings: XC0022, XC0023, XC0024, XC0025. Compiled bindings are put at 8–20× faster than the reflection path, and NativeAOT or trimming builds need them.

A project on .NET 8 or later and a ViewModel class are the baseline; lambda `SetBinding` calls want .NET 9 or newer. Here is the sharp edge: promote XC0025 to `<WarningsAsErrors>` before `<MauiEnableXamlCBindingWithSourceCompilation>` is set and every `Source=` or `RelativeSource` binding becomes a build error. Read the `.csproj` first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-data-binding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/maui-data-binding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-data-binding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-data-binding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills maui-data-binding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-data-binding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-maui/skills/maui-data-binding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-data-binding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-maui/skills/maui-data-binding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Move a page's bindings to `x:DataType` without breaking paths
- Make the UI refresh when a ViewModel property changes
- Trace why a binding slipped into reflection under XC0022
- Pick the right `BindingMode` for an editable control
- Write a converter for a value the control cannot render as is

## Example prompts
- Add `x:DataType` to `Views/MainPage.xaml` and make sure every binding compiles.
- Rewrite `MainViewModel` with `ObservableObject` and `[ObservableProperty]` so the `Label` updates.
- Turn on XC0022 and XC0025 as build errors, then fix what shows up.

# .NET MAUI Data Binding

Wire UI controls to ViewModel properties with compile-time safety, correct
change notification, and minimal overhead. Prefer compiled bindings everywhere
and treat binding warnings as build errors.

## When to Use

- Adding `x:DataType` compiled bindings to a new or existing page
- Implementing `INotifyPropertyChanged` or CommunityToolkit `ObservableObject`
- Creating or consuming `IValueConverter` / `IMultiValueConverter`
- Choosing the correct `BindingMode` for a control property
- Setting `BindingContext` in XAML or code-behind
- Using relative bindings (`Self`, `AncestorType`, `TemplatedParent`)
- Applying `StringFormat`, `FallbackValue`, or `TargetNullValue`
- Writing AOT-safe code bindings with `SetBinding` and lambdas (.NET 9+)

## When Not to Use

- **CollectionView layouts / templates** — use the `maui-collectionview` skill
- **Shell navigation parameters** — use the `maui-shell-navigation` skill
- **Service registration / DI** — use the `maui-dependency-injection` skill
- **Property-change-triggered animations** — use built-in [.NET MAUI animation APIs](https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/maui/user-interface/animation/basic)

## Inputs

- A .NET MAUI project targeting .NET 8 or later
- XAML pages or C# code-behind where bindings are declared
- A ViewModel class (or plan to create one)

## Rules That Change the Answer

Apply these to every binding answer — they are the differences between "it compiles"
and "it actually updates the UI".
