## What it does

The skill covers how to build scrollable lists and grids in .NET MAUI with `CollectionView`. It ships XAML snippets for binding `ItemsSource`, an item `DataTemplate`, `GridItemsLayout` with `Span` and item spacing, selection modes, grouping, an empty view, incremental loading, swipe actions and pull-to-refresh.

Four rules are called non-negotiable, because breaking them either fails to compile or silently drops compiled bindings: never use `ViewCell` as the `DataTemplate` root, use `ObservableCollection<T>` when the list mutates after first render, mutate the bound collection on the UI thread, and set `x:DataType` on every template and on the page root. Everything else — sizing, snap points, header and footer — the skill tells you to pull in only when it answers the actual question.

Scope is fenced off too. Static layouts with no scrolling, map pin lists, table-based entry forms, and `CarouselView` or `BindableLayout` questions are out of scope. If the real problem is binding, DI or navigation, the skill defers to its sibling skills in the same repo. Install runs through `npx skills add`; GitHub Copilot uses `gh skill install` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-collectionview -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/maui-collectionview/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/maui-collectionview/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-collectionview -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/maui-collectionview/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-collectionview -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/maui-collectionview/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills maui-collectionview
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/maui-collectionview/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-collectionview -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-maui/skills/maui-collectionview
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/maui-collectionview/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill maui-collectionview -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- build a scrollable list with a templated item
- lay cards out in a grid with a fixed column count
- turn on single or multiple selection
- show an empty state when there is no data
- load the next page of items while scrolling

## Example prompts
- Create a .NET MAUI page with a CollectionView of orders, item template with an image and a title
- Switch this CollectionView to a two-column grid with spacing between items
- Add pull-to-refresh and an empty view to this CollectionView

# CollectionView — .NET MAUI

`CollectionView` is the primary control for displaying scrollable lists and grids of data in .NET MAUI. It replaces `ListView` with better performance, flexible layouts, and no `ViewCell` requirement.

## When to Use

- Displaying a scrollable list or grid of data items
- Binding a collection of objects to a templated item layout
- Adding selection (single or multiple), grouping, or pull-to-refresh
- Implementing infinite scroll / incremental loading
- Showing swipe actions on list items
- Displaying an empty state when no data is available

## When Not to Use

- Static layouts with a fixed number of items — use `Grid` or `StackLayout` directly
- Map pin lists — use the `Microsoft.Maui.Controls.Maps` NuGet package
- Table-based data entry forms — use standard form controls
- Simple text-only lists with no interaction — consider `BindableLayout` on a `StackLayout`

## Scope Control — Answer Only What Was Asked

This skill is a **reference you consult**, not a checklist you apply. Most requests
need one or two sections from it. Pulling in the rest makes the answer worse.

**Stop conditions — do NOT act when:**

- **The user asked a narrow question.** Answer that question only. Do not append
  grouping, swipe actions, empty views, snap points, or performance tips that
  were not asked about.
- **The user's existing code already works.** Do not rewrite working markup to
