## What it does

Pass the skill a matter slug and it asks for the event type, the date (today unless you override), a short summary, and any field updates. Then it writes a dated entry into `matters/[slug]/history.md` and refreshes the row in `matters/_log.yaml`: `last_updated`, stage, risk, materiality, exposure range, next deadline, legal hold. `matter.md` gets read for reference only, never rewritten.

Event types are already sorted into buckets: procedural, discovery, substantive, strategy, risk re-assessment, stakeholder, administrative. Freeform works if none of them fit. For substantive news and any settlement activity the skill forces a materiality question instead of letting silence count as an answer. Whatever you say lands in the history entry, along with one sentence of reasoning.

Two gates are worth knowing before you rely on it. A slug missing from `_log.yaml` kills the write: the skill refuses and sends you to `/litigation-legal:matter-intake`, because the conflicts check comes first and there is no `history.md` yet. The other fires on settlement acceptance. When `CLAUDE.md` lists the role as Non-lawyer, the skill asks you to confirm you have spoken to an attorney and builds a one-page brief on terms, exposure and authority. Logging an offer or a counter does not trigger that gate.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-update -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/matter-update/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/matter-update/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-update -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/matter-update/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-update -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/matter-update/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal matter-update
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/matter-update/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path litigation-legal/skills/matter-update
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/matter-update/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-update -a opencode
```
## When to use it
- log a hearing in a matter's history as a single entry
- move the next deadline and keep `_log.yaml` in step
- re-check materiality after a key document surfaces
- record an outside counsel switch
- catch a settlement acceptance before anyone signs
## Example prompts
- \`/matter-update acme-v-northwind` the court set a hearing date, append it to the history
- \`/matter-update` log the settlement offer we received and revisit `exposure_range`
- \`/matter-update acme-v-northwind` new document on the merits, check whether materiality needs reclassifying
# /matter-update
1. Follow the workflow and reference below.
2. Confirm slug exists in `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/` and `_log.yaml`.
3. Prompt for event type, date (default today), summary, and any log field updates (risk change, status change, next deadline shift, materiality reclassification).
4. Append dated entry to `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/[slug]/history.md`.
5. Update `_log.yaml` — set `last_updated` to today, apply any field updates.
6. Confirm.
# Matter Update
## Purpose
The portfolio only stays useful if it stays current. This skill makes logging an update cheap — two minutes of structured capture, no freeform drift.
## Load context
- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/_log.yaml` — find the row
- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/[slug]/history.md` — append target
- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/[slug]/matter.md` — reference (don't rewrite)
- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/CLAUDE.md` — risk calibration (if re-assessing risk)
**Conflicts gate — unbypassable.** Before logging an update, check `_log.yaml` for the matter slug. If the matter is not in `_log.yaml`, refuse and route:
> "I don't see [matter slug] in the matter log. Run `/litigation-legal:matter-intake` first so the conflicts check runs and the matter workspace exists. I won't append history to an unmanaged matter — the conflicts check is the gate, and there's no `history.md` to append to until the matter is intaken."
## Input
Slug (required). If not provided, ask — with a short list of recently updated matters to pick from.
## The update
