## What it does

The skill asks one fixed set of questions per matter: identification, conflicts check, source, risk triage, materiality, outside counsel, internal owners, legal hold and key dates. It builds a slug from the matter name — lowercase, hyphens, year — creates `matter.md` with the full narrative, and seeds `history.md` with the intake as its first entry. A structured row goes into `_log.yaml`, which is what the portfolio roll-up reads later.

Before writing anything, it loads `CLAUDE.md` for the practice: risk thresholds, the conflicts method, and the stakeholder list come from there. If the practice profile sets a side (`plaintiff`, `defense`, or a default variant), the role is pre-filled from that default and confirmed with you; with `varies by matter` it asks cold. The role routes downstream skills — plaintiff matters push triage toward case value, defense matters toward reserves and insurance tender.

Conflicts are the hard gate. With status `not-run` the skill stops and writes no `matter.md`, no `history.md`, no log row until you pick one of three paths: run the check now, mark it `pending` with an owner and due date, or record a documented bypass. A bypass lands in `conflicts.override` and stays visible in every portfolio status until someone edits it out by hand. If your team normally clears conflicts after opening a matter, that order is worth revisiting.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-intake -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/matter-intake/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/matter-intake/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-intake -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/matter-intake/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-intake -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/matter-intake/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal matter-intake
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/matter-intake/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-intake -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path litigation-legal/skills/matter-intake
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/matter-intake/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill matter-intake -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- open a new matter against one uniform template
- record the conflicts check before the matter file exists
- keep log rows comparable so the portfolio roll-up works
- seed the matter history with its first event
- pre-fill the party role from the practice profile and confirm it

## Example prompts
- /matter-intake Acme v. Us 2026
- new matter: incoming complaint from a vendor, run our intake
- intake this matter into the portfolio

# /matter-intake

1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/CLAUDE.md` → risk calibration (for triage), landscape (for context, conflicts method), stakeholders (for who to loop in).
2. Follow the workflow and reference below.
3. Run the uniform intake: identification, conflicts check, source, risk triage, materiality, outside counsel, internal owners, legal hold, key dates, initial posture.
4. Generate slug from matter name (lowercase, hyphens, year).
5. Create `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/[slug]/matter.md` — full narrative intake.
6. Create `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/[slug]/history.md` — seeded with the intake as the first entry.
7. Append structured row to `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/_log.yaml`.
8. Confirm with the user: "Here's the row I'll write — any edits?"

# Matter Intake

## Purpose

Every new matter goes through the same intake so the portfolio stays comparable. Uniform rows in `_log.yaml` let the status skill roll up. Narrative in `matter.md` captures what the row can't. History file seeded here becomes the event record.

## Load context

- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/CLAUDE.md` — risk calibration (triage thresholds, materiality, settlement ladder), landscape (stakeholders, outside counsel bench).
- `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/litigation-legal/matters/_log.yaml` — to confirm slug uniqueness.

## The intake

### 1. Identification

- Matter name (as commonly referenced, e.g., "Acme v. Us 2026")
- Counterparty
- Matter type: `contract | employment | ip | regulatory | investigation | product | other`
- Our role: `plaintiff | defendant | claimant | respondent | investigated`
