# market-scan

A skill that re-checks rivals and the category once your brief is written, then edits the project files where positioning has drifted.

## What it does

The skill opens `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` and takes the rival list, the why-you line and the current positioning statement as its baseline. It walks the named competitors first, then the wider category: homepage headlines, pricing, rebrands, category renames, newcomers. Output is a list of deltas rather than a profile of each competitor — what moved since the brief was written and what that means for your positioning.

Two modes exist. An agent with web access runs the scan itself. Without it, the skill turns into an interview: it asks what you have noticed, you paste the pages, it reads them. Say which mode you are in before starting, or the conversation goes nowhere.

Every real change gets tied to an action, and the affected lines in `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` are rewritten with the date; positioning moves land in `docs/gtm-cofounder/gtm-roadmap.md`. A rival's public claim stays tagged `[assumption]` until verified. The cadence is monthly or triggered by something real like a rebrand — daily competitor watching is not the point here.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 16-market-scan -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/16-market-scan/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/16-market-scan/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 16-market-scan -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/16-market-scan/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 16-market-scan -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/16-market-scan/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder 16-market-scan
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/16-market-scan/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 16-market-scan -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --path skills/16-market-scan
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/16-market-scan/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 16-market-scan -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- re-check the rivals listed in your brief and see what moved
- catch a competitor moving onto your wedge
- spot a new entrant in your exact lane
- update the brief and roadmap after a market shift
- separate a real category shift from a cosmetic redesign

## Example prompts
- Scan the market and the rivals in `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md`, and show me only the changes that affect our positioning
- A competitor repositioned — check what it means for our brief and update the affected lines
- I'll paste the competitor pages myself; read them and tell me what belongs in the roadmap

# Market scan (keep your read current)

> Positioning rots. The competitor you sized up six months ago has since rebranded, raised, repriced, or renamed the category. This is the habit that keeps your brief honest about the world outside it.

**Use this when:** a rival just rebranded or repositioned, a new tool is getting attention in your space, your `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` competitor answers are more than a quarter old, or you just have the feeling the ground moved and your messaging is answering last year's market.

## The core idea

`research-the-market` is the first full pass on the market: venues, launches, the problem in public, rivals, openings. This skill is the refresh after that, focused on what changed.

Your `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` captured the market as it was the day you wrote it. Markets don't hold still. A scan re-checks the outside world against your brief and surfaces the deltas: what changed, and which changes actually threaten or help your positioning. Most don't matter. The scan's job is to find the two or three that do, not to produce a competitor spreadsheet.

## Before you start: can your agent see the web?

- **If your agent can browse or search the web**, it runs the scan for real: competitor homepages, changelogs, pricing pages, launch posts, and recent discussion.
- **If it can't**, it runs the scan as an interview: it asks what you've noticed and where, and you paste in the pages. Same output, you're the browser. Say which mode you're in up front.

## How to run this (for the agent)

- **Start from the brief.** Read `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md`: the rivals ("what do they use instead"), the "why you", the villain, and the current positioning line. That's your baseline to compare against.
