## What it does

The skill converts various file formats into Markdown by running `uvx markitdown`. It supports PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx, .xls), HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, EPub books, and ZIP archives. It also extracts text from images via OCR and transcribes audio files while reading EXIF metadata.

Conversion preserves document structure including headings, tables, bullet lists, and links. Output can be printed directly, piped through standard input, or written to disk with `-o`.

The runner requires `uvx` available in your environment. If complex scanned PDFs fail to extract properly, pass `-d` with an Azure Document Intelligence endpoint via `-e`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill markdown-converter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/markdown-converter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/markdown-converter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill markdown-converter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/markdown-converter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill markdown-converter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/markdown-converter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install intellectronica/agent-skills markdown-converter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/markdown-converter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill markdown-converter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/intellectronica/agent-skills --path skills/markdown-converter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/markdown-converter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill markdown-converter -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- convert Word documents and PowerPoint slides to clean Markdown
- extract tables and structure from Excel sheets for LLM analysis
- run OCR on images to pull out text alongside EXIF data
- transcribe audio files into structured Markdown notes

## Example prompts
- Convert `report.docx` to Markdown and save it as `report.md`.
- Turn the `data.xlsx` spreadsheet into Markdown.
- Extract text from `scan.pdf` using Azure Document Intelligence.

# Markdown Converter

Convert files to Markdown using `uvx markitdown` — no installation required.

## Basic Usage

```bash
# Convert to stdout
uvx markitdown input.pdf
# Save to file
uvx markitdown input.pdf -o output.md
uvx markitdown input.docx > output.md
# From stdin
cat input.pdf | uvx markitdown
```

## Supported Formats

- **Documents**: PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx, .xls)
- **Web/Data**: HTML, CSV, JSON, XML
- **Media**: Images (EXIF + OCR), Audio (EXIF + transcription)
- **Other**: ZIP (iterates contents), YouTube URLs, EPub

## Options

```bash
-o OUTPUT      # Output file
-x EXTENSION   # Hint file extension (for stdin)
-m MIME_TYPE   # Hint MIME type
-c CHARSET     # Hint charset (e.g., UTF-8)
-d             # Use Azure Document Intelligence
-e ENDPOINT    # Document Intelligence endpoint
--use-plugins  # Enable 3rd-party plugins
--list-plugins # Show installed plugins
```

## Examples

```bash
# Convert Word document
uvx markitdown report.docx -o report.md
# Convert Excel spreadsheet
uvx markitdown data.xlsx > data.md
# Convert PowerPoint presentation
uvx markitdown slides.pptx -o slides.md
# Convert with file type hint (for stdin)
cat document | uvx markitdown -x .pdf > output.md
# Use Azure Document Intelligence for better PDF extraction
uvx markitdown scan.pdf -d -e "https://your-resource.cognitiveservices.azure.com/"
```

## Notes

- Output preserves document structure: headings, tables, lists, links
- First run caches dependencies; subsequent runs are faster
- For complex PDFs with poor extraction, use `-d` with Azure Document Intelligence
