## What it does

The skill spells out the `<type>(<scope>): <subject>` header and a table of types: `feat`, `fix`, `docs`, `refactor`, `perf`, `test`, `build`, `ci`, `chore`, `deps`, `style`, `revert`. Subject lines stay under 70 characters, start lowercase, carry no trailing period, and use the imperative mood. The body explains what changed and why, not how.

Before committing, the skill tells the agent to check the current branch with `git branch --show-current`. On `main` or `master` it creates a branch named `<type>/<short-description>`, where the type matches the commit type. Breaking changes get a `!` after the type or a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer. Reverts have their own format with the commit hash and a reason.

Nothing here validates your messages. It is guidance for the agent, not a hook or a linter, so if your repo already runs `commitlint` or enforces its own format, the two rule sets can disagree. Worth deciding up front which one wins.

One `npx skills add` command covers six platforms, Claude, Codex and Cursor among them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --skill conventional-commit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/conventional-commit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --skill conventional-commit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --skill conventional-commit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install marcelorodrigo/agent-skills conventional-commit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --skill conventional-commit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --path skills/conventional-commit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marcelorodrigo/agent-skills --skill conventional-commit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/marcelorodrigo/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/conventional-commit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a commit message to the Conventional Commits spec without checking the docs
- split a change into one stable, reviewable commit
- flag a breaking API change with `!` or a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer
- format a revert with the commit hash and a reason
- name a branch so it matches the commit type

## Example prompts
- commit the user API changes using conventional commits
- make a commit for the new alerts feature, scope alerts
- write a revert for commit abc123def456 with the reason

# Conventional Commit Messages

Follow these conventions when creating commits.

## Prerequisites

Before committing, ensure you're working on a feature branch, not the main branch.

```bash
# Check current branch
git branch --show-current
```

If you're on `main` or `master`, create a new branch first:

```bash
# Create and switch to a new branch
git checkout -b <type>/<short-description>
```

Branch naming should follow the pattern: `<type>/<short-description>` where type matches the commit type (e.g., `feat/add-user-auth`, `fix/null-pointer-error`, `refactor/extract-validation`).

## Format

```
<type>(<scope>): <subject>
<body>
<footer>
```

The header is required. Scope is optional. All lines must stay under 100 characters.

## Commit Types

| Type | Purpose |
|------|---------|
| `build` | Build system or CI changes |
| `chore` | Routine maintenance tasks |
| `ci` | Continuous integration configuration |
| `deps` | Dependency updates |
| `docs` | Documentation changes |
| `feat` | New feature |
| `fix` | Bug fix |
| `perf` | Performance improvement |
| `refactor` | Code refactoring (no behavior change) |
| `revert` | Revert a previous commit |
| `style` | Code style and formatting |
| `test` | Tests added, updated or improved |

## Subject Line Rules

- Use imperative, present tense: "add feature" not "added feature"
- Do not capitalize the first letter
- No period at the end
- Maximum 70 characters

## Body Guidelines

- Explain **what** and **why**, not how
- Use imperative mood and present tense
- Include motivation for the change
- Contrast with previous behavior when relevant

## Conventional Commits
The commit contains the following structural elements, to communicate intent to the consumers of your library:

- fix: a commit of the type fix patches a bug in your codebase (this correlates with PATCH in Semantic Versioning).
- feat: a commit of the type feat introduces a new feature to the codebase (this correlates with MINOR in Semantic Versioning).
- BREAKING CHANGE: a commit that has a footer BREAKING CHANGE:, or appends a ! after the type/scope, introduces a breaking API change (correlating with MAJOR in Semantic Versioning). A BREAKING CHANGE can be part of commits of any type.
