# maplibre-cartography

A MapLibre GL JS skill for label and icon colors, visual hierarchy and layer order. Useful when a style reads fine on a vector basemap but vanishes over imagery.

## What it does

The skill lays out cartographic rules for MapLibre GL JS styles. It includes a table of `text-color` and `text-halo-color` pairings for three basemap types: light vector, dark vector, and satellite or aerial imagery. For imagery it recommends white text with a dark semi-transparent halo (`rgba(0,0,0,0.75)`) at width 1.2. A second table gives `text-halo-width` ranges for city, country and small POI labels.

Point symbols get their own treatment. A green icon over green parkland camouflages, so the skill points at chroma instead of hue: a saturated fill such as amber or terracotta separates from low-saturation photography. `icon-halo-color` and `icon-halo-width` apply only to SDF sprite images — a full-color raster icon has no halo paint property, so any edge treatment has to be baked into the artwork. Flat fills look like stickers on a photo, so landform symbols get a gradient and a contact shadow, with lighting matched to `hillshade-illumination-direction`.

There is a section on loading SVG through `addImage`: gradients and filters bake in at decode time, but the `viewBox` needs padding or halos and shadows clip at the edge. For dense point data the skill suggests `"icon-allow-overlap": true`. It hands off font and glyph work to `maplibre-fonts-glyphs` and sprite, icon and route shield work to `maplibre-sprites-icons`. Worth running before a style ships — recoloring labels after a move to imagery means doing the job twice.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --skill maplibre-cartography -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/maplibre-cartography/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/maplibre-cartography/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --skill maplibre-cartography -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/maplibre-cartography/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --skill maplibre-cartography -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/maplibre-cartography/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills maplibre-cartography
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/maplibre-cartography/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --skill maplibre-cartography -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --path skills/maplibre-cartography
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/maplibre-cartography/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add maplibre/maplibre-agent-skills --skill maplibre-cartography -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- pick label and halo colors for a specific basemap
- make markers readable on satellite imagery
- inject data layers without covering basemap labels
- restyle vector roads so they sit on aerial imagery
- audit a style for contrast accessibility before release

## Example prompts
- pick label colors for this MapLibre style over satellite imagery
- my marker disappears over green parkland — what should change in the style
- what layer order keeps my data from covering basemap labels

# MapLibre Cartography

MapLibre renders exactly what you describe in your style. This skill covers how to describe it well: choosing label colors for readability on any basemap, building a coherent visual hierarchy, and ordering style layers correctly. For font/glyph setup, see [maplibre-fonts-glyphs](../maplibre-fonts-glyphs/SKILL.md); for sprites, icon sourcing, and route shields, see [maplibre-sprites-icons](../maplibre-sprites-icons/SKILL.md).

## When to Use This Skill

- Reviewing a style against cartographic best practices before it ships
- Choosing label `text-color` and `text-halo-color`, or point symbol/icon colors, for a new or migrated style — including cases where they read fine on a flat vector basemap but disappear or camouflage once the basemap is imagery
- Setting up or debugging `sprite`, icons, or route shields — see [maplibre-sprites-icons](../maplibre-sprites-icons/SKILL.md); for `glyphs`, see [maplibre-fonts-glyphs](../maplibre-fonts-glyphs/SKILL.md)
- Injecting your own data layers into an existing basemap without covering labels
- Restyling roads from a light-basemap vector palette so they sit in (not on top of) imagery
- Auditing a style for contrast accessibility
