# mapbox-style-patterns

Ready-made Mapbox layer setups for common maps: POI finders, real estate, navigation, delivery. Useful when you want a proven style instead of picking colors from scratch.

## What it does

The skill ships a library of map style patterns. The first one is written out in full: a restaurant and POI finder. It lists layers for background, water, parks, minor and major roads, plus markers with labels. The base map stays desaturated so it does not fight with photos, markers are high contrast, and labels get a halo for readability.

The other scenarios live in separate files under `references/`: real estate with property boundaries and price color-coding, a minimal grayscale base for choropleth and heatmap overlays, navigation with routes and turn arrows, a dark theme, and delivery tracking with zones. There are also files on clustering dense points, 3D buildings, terrain, and a breakdown of how `addInteraction`, `setFeatureState` and `appearances` fit together.

A decision tree walks you through four questions: what the primary content is, where the map is viewed, what the user's main action is, and whether the target is mobile or desktop. One pattern shows how to thin out roads by zoom with a `step` filter. The recipes assume Mapbox Streets, so check the source and layer names against your own style — otherwise the `class` filters will match nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-style-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-style-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-style-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills mapbox-style-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-style-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --path skills/mapbox-style-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-style-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mapbox-style-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a map style for a restaurant or POI finder
- show property boundaries colored by price
- set up a grayscale base for a choropleth or heatmap
- draw a route with turn arrows
- add delivery tracking and zones to a map

## Example prompts
- Build a restaurant finder map style using the POI Finder pattern
- I need a dark map theme — use the Dark Mode pattern
- Add clustering for dense points on the map

# Mapbox Style Patterns Skill

This skill provides battle-tested style patterns and layer configurations for common mapping scenarios.

## Pattern Library

### Pattern 1: Restaurant/POI Finder

**Use case:** Consumer app showing restaurants, cafes, bars, or other points of interest

**Visual requirements:**

- POIs must be immediately visible
- Street context for navigation
- Neutral background (photos/content overlay)
- Mobile-optimized
