## What it does

The skill hands your agent a reference of equivalents between Google Maps Platform and Mapbox GL JS. Map methods, events, markers, popups — each pair sits in a table with the old call next to the new one. The agent copies the right shape instead of guessing at the API.

Coordinate order is where migrations break. Google takes `{lat, lng}`, Mapbox takes `[lng, lat]`, and the skill calls that out before you touch `setCenter` or `fitBounds`. The rendering model differs too: Google draws markers as DOM elements, Mapbox draws layers through WebGL. Past a few hundred points the skill points you at a GeoJSON source with a `circle` or `symbol` layer instead of individual markers.

There is an audit checklist as well — go through the Google features you actually use and see which ones carry over. Street View has no direct Mapbox equivalent, so it is worth checking whether your product depends on it. You will need a Mapbox access token, set on `mapboxgl.accessToken` in place of the Google key in the script tag.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-google-maps-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-google-maps-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-google-maps-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills mapbox-google-maps-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-google-maps-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --path skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-google-maps-migration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mapbox-google-maps-migration/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- port map initialization from google.maps.Map to mapboxgl.Map
- find the Mapbox equivalent of a given Google Maps method or event
- swap DOM markers for a GeoJSON source and layer on large point sets
- rewrite InfoWindow code as mapboxgl.Popup
- list which Google Maps features your app still depends on

## Example prompts
- Convert the map setup in this file from Google Maps to Mapbox GL JS, read the token from an env variable
- Replace google.maps.Marker with a circle layer fed by a GeoJSON source, roughly two thousand points
- Show me what replaces google.maps.event.addListener for the click event

# Mapbox Google Maps Migration Skill

Comprehensive guidance for migrating from Google Maps Platform to Mapbox GL JS. Provides API equivalents, pattern translations, and strategies for successful migration.

## Core Philosophy Differences

### Google Maps: Imperative & Object-Oriented

- Create objects (Marker, Polygon, etc.)
- Add to map with `.setMap(map)`
- Update properties with setters
- Heavy reliance on object instances

### Mapbox GL JS: Declarative & Data-Driven

- Add data sources
- Define layers (visual representation)
- Style with JSON
- Update data, not object properties

**Key Insight:** Mapbox treats everything as data + styling, not individual objects.

## Map Initialization

### Google Maps

```javascript
const map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
  center: { lat: 37.7749, lng: -122.4194 },
  zoom: 12,
  mapTypeId: 'roadmap' // or 'satellite', 'hybrid', 'terrain'
});
```

### Mapbox GL JS

```javascript
mapboxgl.accessToken = 'YOUR_MAPBOX_TOKEN';
const map = new mapboxgl.Map({
  container: 'map',
  style: 'mapbox://styles/mapbox/streets-v12', // or satellite-v9, outdoors-v12
  center: [-122.4194, 37.7749], // [lng, lat] - note the order!
  zoom: 12
});
```

**Key Differences:**

- **Coordinate order:** Google uses `{lat, lng}`, Mapbox uses `[lng, lat]`
- **Authentication:** Google uses API key in script tag, Mapbox uses access token in code
- **Styling:** Google uses map types, Mapbox uses full style URLs

### Map Methods

| Google Maps | Mapbox GL JS | Notes |
| ------------------------ | -------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| `map.setCenter(latLng)`  | `map.setCenter([lng, lat])`            | Coordinate order reversed     |
| `map.getCenter()`        | `map.getCenter()`                      | Returns LngLat object         |
| `map.setZoom(zoom)`      | `map.setZoom(zoom)`                    | Same behavior                 |
| `map.getZoom()`          | `map.getZoom()`                        | Same behavior                 |
