## What it does

The skill tells an agent how to pick a tool from the Mapbox MCP Server based on the problem at hand. Two categories exist: offline geometry on Turf.js and Mapbox routing APIs. The first handles pure math — straight-line distance, point-in-polygon checks, buffers, centroids, areas. The second is for anything tied to the road network: travel time, traffic-aware routes, stop ordering, isochrones.

Inside are decision tables. For distance: as the crow flies means `distance_tool`, as the crow drives means `directions_tool` or `matrix_tool`. For zones: a plain radius is `buffer_tool`, a travel-time zone is `isochrone_tool`. For routes: turn-by-turn comes from `directions_tool`, stop order from `optimization_tool`, GPS traces get snapped with `map_matching_tool`.

The core idea is to clarify what "distance" means in context — straight line or road. Ask an agent about the distance between warehouses and it should pick the matching tool instead of defaulting to one. The skill assumes a Mapbox MCP Server is connected: without it the routing tools cannot be called, and only the geometric calculations remain.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-geospatial-operations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-geospatial-operations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-geospatial-operations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills mapbox-geospatial-operations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-geospatial-operations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --path skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-geospatial-operations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mapbox-geospatial-operations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- measure straight-line distance between points
- build a 30-minute drive-time zone
- check whether an address falls inside a delivery area
- optimize the visiting order for several stops
- snap a GPS trace to the road network

## Example prompts
- Measure the distance between these five warehouses by road, not as the crow flies
- Build a 30-minute drive-time isochrone from the office and check which addresses fall inside
- Find the best order to visit these stops by car

# Mapbox Geospatial Operations Skill

Expert guidance for AI assistants on choosing the right geospatial tools from the Mapbox MCP Server. Focuses on selecting tools based on **what the problem requires** - geometric calculations vs routing, straight-line vs road network, and accuracy needs.

## Core Principle: Problem Type Determines Tool Choice

The Mapbox MCP Server provides two categories of geospatial tools:

1. **Offline Geometric Tools** - Use Turf.js for pure geometric/spatial calculations
2. **Routing & Navigation APIs** - Use Mapbox APIs when you need real-world routing, traffic, or travel times

**The key question: What does the problem actually require?**

### Decision Framework

| Problem Characteristic                                 | Tool Category     | Why                                      |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| **Straight-line distance** (as the crow flies) | Offline geometric | Accurate for geometric distance |
| **Road/path distance** (as the crow drives) | Routing API | Only routing APIs know road networks |
| **Travel time** | Routing API | Requires routing with speed/traffic data |
| **Point containment** (is X inside Y?) | Offline geometric | Pure geometric operation |
| **Geographic shapes** (buffers, centroids, areas) | Offline geometric | Mathematical/geometric operations |
| **Traffic-aware routing**                              | Routing API       | Requires real-time traffic data          |
| **Route optimization** (best order to visit) | Routing API | Complex routing algorithm |
| **High-frequency checks** (e.g., real-time geofencing) | Offline geometric | Instant response, no latency             |

## Decision Matrices by Use Case

### Distance Calculations

**User asks: "How far is X from Y?"**

| What They Actually Mean | Tool Choice | Why |
```
