## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of cartographic rules for picking colors, label sizes and layer order. It covers visual hierarchy, color theory, typography at map scale and zoom-level strategy. Four ready palettes ship as JSON: light, dark, high contrast and vintage.

It also names the mistakes worth checking. On dark themes roads should stay neutral gray (`#3a3a3a`) rather than take a hue, because colored base roads fight with your route lines and markers. User-generated content — the route, the selected point, the user position — belongs above POIs, not below them. That one is easy to get backwards.

For custom styles it advises starting POIs at zoom 12 instead of 10; at metro scale the icons pile up. Two reference files load on demand: `references/scenarios.md` for common scenarios and `references/performance-testing.md` for optimization. Works in Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-cartography -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mapbox-cartography/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-cartography -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-cartography -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills mapbox-cartography
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-cartography -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --path skills/mapbox-cartography
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills --skill mapbox-cartography -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/mapbox-cartography/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a palette for a dark map theme
- separate roads, water and labels by contrast
- order layers so the route renders above POIs
- choose font sizes for street and city labels
- decide at which zoom POIs should appear

## Example prompts
- Build a dark map style for a delivery app where the route reads above everything
- Check my style JSON for colored roads competing with markers
- At which zoom should POIs appear in a custom style, and why

# Mapbox Cartography Skill

This skill provides expert cartographic knowledge to help you design effective, beautiful, and functional maps using Mapbox.

## Core Cartographic Principles

### Visual Hierarchy

Maps must guide the viewer's attention to what matters most:

- **Most important**: POIs, user location, route highlights
- **Secondary**: Major roads, city labels, landmarks
- **Tertiary**: Minor streets, administrative boundaries
- **Background**: Water, land use, terrain

**Implementation:**

- Use size, color intensity, and contrast to establish hierarchy
- Primary features: high contrast, larger symbols, bold colors
- Background features: low contrast, muted colors, smaller text

### Color Theory for Maps

**Color Harmony:**

- **Analogous colors**: Use colors next to each other on color wheel (blue-green-teal) for cohesive designs
- **Complementary colors**: Use opposite colors (blue/orange, red/green) for high contrast emphasis
- **Monochromatic**: Single hue with varying saturation/brightness for elegant, minimal designs

**Color Psychology:**

- **Blue**: Water, trust, calm, professional (default for water bodies)
- **Green**: Parks, nature, growth, eco-friendly (vegetation, parks)
- **Red/Orange**: Urgent, important, dining (alerts, restaurants)
- **Yellow**: Caution, highlight, attention (warnings, selected items)
- **Gray**: Neutral, background, roads (infrastructure)

**Accessibility:**

- Ensure 4.5:1 contrast ratio for text (WCAG AA)
- Don't rely solely on color to convey information
- Test designs with colorblind simulators
- Avoid red/green combinations for critical distinctions

**Color Palette Templates:**

Light Theme (Day/Professional):

```json
{
  "background": "#f5f5f5",
  "water": "#a0c8f0",
  "parks": "#d4e7c5",
  "roads": "#ffffff",
  "buildings": "#e0e0e0",
  "text": "#333333"
}
```

Dark Theme (Night Mode):

```json
{
  "background": "#1a1a1a",
  "water": "#0d47a1",
  "parks": "#2e7d32",
  "roads": "#3a3a3a",
  "buildings": "#2d2d2d",
  "text": "#ffffff"
}
```
