## What it does

The skill lays out two production paths. The photoreal one keyframes a camera in Google Earth Studio, which exports an image sequence plus a `.jsx` script that rebuilds the same 3D camera in After Effects. The vector one projects GeoJSON or SVG to screen pixels with `d3-geo` and renders in Remotion or D3, so pins, routes and labels all share one coordinate space as the camera transform moves.

The signature detail is cadence. Graphic layers animate at 12 fps inside a 24 fps edit: base footage stays smooth, while pins, route draw-ons and label pops step every two frames. In After Effects that is `posterizeTime(12)` or a 12 fps precomp nested in the master; in code you snap the frame number down to the step before computing any animated value. Stutter the overlay only — stuttering everything reads as dropped frames.

Overlays sit on top of either path. A pin takes its position from the same projection as the map and settles through a `spring` with overshoot; a route strokes on via `stroke-dashoffset` with `pathLength="1"`, so a single 0-to-1 progress value draws a line of any length. The Earth Studio path needs the browser tool and After Effects; the vector path needs a projection library and a renderer such as Remotion.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/map-animation-skills --skill map-animation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/map-animation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/map-animation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/map-animation-skills --skill map-animation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/map-animation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/map-animation-skills --skill map-animation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/map-animation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/map-animation-skills map-animation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/map-animation-skills --skill map-animation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/map-animation-skills --path skills/map-animation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/map-animation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/map-animation-skills --skill map-animation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build a globe-to-city zoom for an explainer beat
- draw a route between two points on a map
- highlight a country or region and label it
- stagger pin drops across a coordinates array
- keep map graphics at 12 fps while the base stays smooth

## Example prompts
- make a Vox-style map animation zooming from the globe to Kyiv
- draw a route between Kyiv and Lviv and label both cities
- import the Earth Studio camera into After Effects and parent the pins to the track

# Map Animation

Build editorial, "Vox-style" animated maps: a camera that zooms, orbits, and pans over a base map while location pins drop, routes draw on, regions highlight, and labels call out — all snapped to a deliberate 12fps stutter so motion reads as graphic, not photographic. Two production paths: photoreal base motion from **Google Earth Studio** composited in After Effects, and code-renderable **vector maps** (GeoJSON/SVG) driven from a coordinates array in Remotion or D3.

## When to use

- A documentary/explainer beat that establishes place: zoom from globe to city, orbit a landmark, pan along a border.
- Show movement across geography: a route drawing between two points, a supply chain, a migration, a flight path.
- Highlight a country, state, or region and label it; build a step-by-step geographic walkthrough.
- Turn a list of coordinates/events into a repeatable, data-driven map sequence for video.

## Pick the path

| You need | Path | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Photoreal terrain, real satellite/3D buildings, cinematic camera | **Google Earth Studio → After Effects** | Image sequence + camera `.jsx`, composited in AE |
| Clean editorial vector look, full control, data-driven | **Vector (GeoJSON/SVG)** in Remotion or D3 | Code-rendered MP4/GIF or web SVG |
| Pins / routes / highlights / labels on top of either | **Overlay layer** | AE shape/null layers OR React/SVG components |

Most "Vox-style" pieces combine them: Earth Studio for the base camera move, vector overlays for the pins, routes, and labels on top.

## The signature look: 12fps stutter

The single most recognizable trait of this style is **animating the map graphics at 12fps inside a 24fps edit**. The base footage and audio run at 24 (smooth); the graphic layer — camera-driven pins, route draw-on, label pops — steps at 12. The result reads as intentional, hand-built, "infographic" motion rather than soft video.
