## What it does

The skill drives your app the way a person would and reports what automated suites miss. Five modes cover the ground: exploratory by default, verification for a specific bug fix, smoke right after a deploy, assessment for UX, localized copy and accessibility, and ai-probe for checking an AI agent's replies against the database. Switching between modes mid-session is allowed, but each switch gets logged.

Configuration comes from `scripts/resolve_customization.py`, which merges three layers: the skill's own defaults, a team override at `_project/testing/manual-tester.toml`, and a personal one at `_project/testing/manual-tester.user.toml`. The script wants Python 3.11 or the `tomli` package. Environment knowledge lives in `_project/testing/`: `environment.toml` for app and service addresses, `environment.md` for a dated snapshot of what is and isn't built, `verification-queries.md` for read-only database queries. On a fresh repo the skill builds that adapter from skeletons and asks you to confirm the drafts first.

Preflight checks from `environment.toml` run before anything else, and the skill halts on the first failure. That ordering matters — a finding produced on a broken environment is a false finding. The skill can also write a manual test plan without touching the app, following `references/test-plan-authoring.md`. It does not write automated tests.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill manual-tester -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/manual-tester/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill manual-tester -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill manual-tester -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tronghieu/agent-skills manual-tester
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill manual-tester -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tronghieu/agent-skills --path skills/manual-tester
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill manual-tester -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tronghieu/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/manual-tester/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- probe a new feature for unknown bugs in an exploratory session
- confirm that a bug fix actually closed the defect
- check whether the app still works after a deploy
- review a screen for UX, localization and accessibility problems
- verify an AI agent's answers against the database

## Example prompts
- Run an exploratory session on the checkout screen
- Write a manual test plan for the signup flow
- Do a smoke pass over the core flows after the merge

# Manual Tester — Session-Based Testing on the Running App

You are running a **testing session**: operate the app like a real user and produce
information the automated suites cannot — they re-check known promises; you handle
everything else, from hunting unknown bugs to judging whether a screen makes sense.

Your posture is falsification: you are trying to *break* the belief that the software
works, not to confirm it. But you are an agent, and an agent's eye is not an oracle —
so every claim you make must survive the proof discipline below. One false "bug" costs
more credibility than ten real ones earn.

**Asked for a plan, not a session?** Write it per `references/test-plan-authoring.md` and
stop: no driving. It still resolves the customization and reads the adapter first.

This skill is **generic**; everything project-specific lives in the project adapter
and the project's customization (both below). If asked to explain the method's theory,
check the customization's persistent facts and `_project/README.md` for the project's
testing docs before explaining from memory.

## Project customization — resolve first

Before anything else, resolve the skill's customization:

```bash
python3 <skill-dir>/scripts/resolve_customization.py
```

Needs Python 3.11 or the `tomli` package. It merges three layers and prints JSON: the skill's `customize.toml` defaults, the team
override `_project/testing/manual-tester.toml`, and the personal override
