# mantis-review

Reviews findings against the actual source code and drops false positives. Useful once a scan has produced a list of bugs that needs cleaning up.

## What it does

The skill runs as the `/mantis-review` slash command and acts as an independent validator. It reads JSON files from `workspace/findings/`, takes the `code_paths` from each finding, and opens those spots in the source. Every finding is treated as a false positive by default — the job is to disprove that. The original finder's reasoning is ignored on purpose, since it may be hallucinated.

Results go back into the same files: `status`, `reasoning`, `repro_hints` and `triage_checklist` get updated, and a history entry is appended. The skill writes a helper script at `workspace/helpers/append_review.py` to do it. Re-running does not duplicate work: the idempotency key is (pass number, snapshot), so if a reviewer entry for the current pass already exists, the update is skipped.

When a snapshot is pinned, code is read from it rather than the live tree. Before reading anything, the skill checks `.mantis_snapshot_id` in that root — if it does not match the expected ID, it stops with “snapshot sentinel mismatch”. Writing into a pinned root is off limits, so anything that compiles or generates files runs in a private shadow copy made with `mktemp -d`. Reproducing crashes and patching code are outside its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mantis-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install google/mantis mantis-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/google/mantis --path skills/mantis-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/google/mantis/tree/HEAD/skills/mantis-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- filter false positives before the report
- re-check a finding against current code
- set status and reason on each finding
- avoid duplicate reviews on a re-run
- tie a verdict to a pinned snapshot

## Example prompts
- Run `/mantis-review` and validate the findings in `workspace/findings/`
- Review the current pass and update finding statuses
- Re-check findings against the pinned snapshot

# Reviewer (/mantis-review)

## System Goal

Independent Validator. Reviews consolidated findings against active source code
to verify validity and filter out noise and false positives.

## Command Definition

- **Command:** `/mantis-review`
- **Description:** Independently reviews findings and filters out false
  positives.

## Input/Output Contract

- **Reads**:
  - `workspace/findings/` (finding JSON files, including each finding's optional
    `discovery_commit` provenance stamp).
  - `workspace/.mantis_state.json` (current loop `pass_number`; and, when
    present, `active_snapshot` = `{root, snapshot_id, snapshot_pinned}` for
    snapshot provenance).
  - Invocation args when passed by the orchestrator: `--snapshot_root`,
    `--snapshot_id`, `--state_root` (and, rarely, `--target_root`).
  - Target source code files at the `code_paths` paths/lines, read under the
    resolved `CODE_ROOT` (the pinned snapshot root — see Instructions Step 0 /
    Block A), never the live tree when a snapshot is pinned.
- **Writes**:
  - Updates findings on disk in-place (sets `"status"`, `"reasoning"`,
    `"repro_hints"`, `"triage_checklist"`, and appends history).
  - Writes helper script `workspace/helpers/append_review.py`.
- **Preconditions**:
  - `workspace/findings/` exists with finding files.
  - Target source code files exist.
- **Idempotency Guarantee**:
  - Modifies finding files in-place using the helper script `append_review.py`,
    which MUST carry `# MANTIS_HELPER_VERSION = 2` as its first line; regenerate
    the helper if that marker is absent or a different integer (see Instructions
    step 5).
  - Idempotency key is **(pass_number, snapshot)**. Before (re)writing a
    finding, scan its `history` array:
    - **SNAPSHOT MODE OFF** (neither `--snapshot_id` was passed NOR is
      `active_snapshot` readable in state): SKIP the review update iff a
      `"stage": "reviewer"` entry already exists for the current `pass_number`
      (byte-for-byte today's behavior).
    - **SNAPSHOT MODE ON**: SKIP the review update iff a `"stage": "reviewer"`
      entry exists whose `pass_number` equals the current pass AND whose
      `snapshot` equals `SNAPSHOT_ID`. A reviewer entry that lacks `snapshot`
      (legacy) or carries a different `snapshot` counts as UNKNOWN → RE-REVIEW
      (do NOT skip), so a finding reviewed under the old skill is re-grounded
```
