# mantis-history

A skill that walks your version control history, pulls out past vulnerabilities and the fixes behind them, and writes them to workspace/historical_learnings.jsonl for later Mantis stages.

## What it does

It starts from the project structure, or an existing summary, and works out which classes of security issue are worth hunting for in commits. Then it writes an extraction script for that job and runs it. The result is `workspace/historical_learnings.jsonl`: past vulnerabilities, the patches around them, and the files involved.

VCS logs, diffs and blame run against the live repository root, not the snapshot, because the pinned copy has `.git`, `.hg` and `.repo` stripped out. The cache, the script and the jsonl live under `--state_root/workspace/`, outside the target tree, so a clean or sync won't wipe them. The cache is the source of truth: the database is rebuilt from it each run and invalidated when history is rewritten or the VCS type changes.

Make sure the history is reachable from the machine doing the run, and check how deep the clone goes. A shallow history gets flagged `PARTIAL_SHALLOW`, so treat that output as partial. When no VCS is detected, the stage writes an empty database with `history_status=UNSUPPORTED_VCS` and exits cleanly.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-history -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mantis-history/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-history -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-history -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install google/mantis mantis-history
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-history -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/google/mantis --path skills/mantis-history
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-history -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/google/mantis/tree/HEAD/skills/mantis-history/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull past vulnerabilities and their fixes out of commit history
- build `historical_learnings.jsonl` as context for later stages
- decide from the codebase layout which issue classes to grep commits for
- survive a rerun without rebuilding the database from scratch
- stay quiet instead of crashing on a repo with no detected VCS

## Example prompts
- run `/mantis-history` and build a database of past vulnerabilities from the repo history
- run `/mantis-history` with `--state_root ./workspace` so the cache and jsonl sit outside the project tree
- show me what landed in `workspace/historical_learnings.jsonl`

# History Analyzer (/mantis-history)

## System Goal

Historical Vulnerability Extractor. Analyzes repository's version control system
(VCS) history to extract past vulnerabilities, security-related fixes, patches,
and associated files, creating a historical learnings database to inform
downstream skills.

## Command Definition

- **Command:** `/mantis-history`
- **Description:** Analyzes repository's version control system (VCS) history to
  extract past vulnerabilities and fixes, producing a structured historical
  learnings file (`workspace/historical_learnings.jsonl`).
- **Arguments (optional; supplied by the orchestrator, consumed by Block A):**
  `--snapshot_root`/`--snapshot_id`/`--state_root`. History reads VCS logs from
  the LIVE repository root (Block A step 5), not the snapshot; it uses
  `--state_root` only to place its cache/output/script. All absent -> DEGRADED
  (behaves as today, live cwd).

## Input/Output Contract

- **Reads**:
  - `workspace/.mantis_state.json` (to track current loop pass).
  - Codebase directory structure and key files (to determine stack).
  - VCS history logs (commit messages, titles, diffs).
  - `mantis-summary.md` (optional, if available).
  - Internal history analysis cache (optional, if exists).
- **Writes**:
  - VCS extraction script (written on-the-fly to workspace).
  - `workspace/historical_learnings.jsonl`.
  - Internal history analysis cache.
  - All under `--state_root/workspace/` (cache, `historical_learnings.jsonl`,
    extraction script): kept outside the target tree. Optional `history_status`
    marker (`UNSUPPORTED_VCS` / `PARTIAL_SHALLOW`).
- **Preconditions**:
  - Target repository and VCS logs must be accessible.
- **Idempotency Guarantee**:
  - The cache is the source of truth: the output DB is rebuilt from it every run
    and is never truncated to empty while the cache is non-empty. The cache is
    invalidated on VCS-history rewrite (`_analyzed_head` no longer reachable) or
    a vcs_type/repo-identity change. On `none`/`unknown` VCS the stage writes an
    empty DB + `history_status=UNSUPPORTED_VCS` and exits.
