# mantis-advise

The skill makes your coding agent check a project's security knowledge base before it edits code: threat models, past bugs in that file, verified patches.

## What it does

The skill points your coding agent at a security knowledge base and asks it to look there before touching code. Under the hood it calls `reference/scripts/advise.py`, which reads a SQLite `knowledge.db` holding threat models, past vulnerabilities with their `lineage_id`, verified patch diffs, triaged false positives and learned trajectory invariants. Point it at a file or module and you get markdown advice: where the trust boundaries sit, what broke there before, which idioms were marked safe.

From bash it looks like `python3 "$MANTIS_HOME/reference/scripts/advise.py" --file src/auth.py`. Pass `--json` for structured output, or `--remediate <finding_id>` for an architectural remediation dossier with a verification plan. Inside a Python harness you can call `query_security_guidance` from `core.database` instead of shelling out.

Invoke the script through an absolute path or `$MANTIS_HOME`. A relative path inside the audited repository could be swapped for a fake one, so set the variable and have Python 3 and a `knowledge.db` ready first. Multi-pass red-team exploitation and fuzzing sit outside what this skill was built for.

That path rule is the one setting worth getting right on day one. Launch the script from the wrong directory and the advice describes somebody else's code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-advise -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mantis-advise/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-advise -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-advise -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install google/mantis mantis-advise
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-advise -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/google/mantis --path skills/mantis-advise
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/mantis --skill mantis-advise -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/google/mantis/tree/HEAD/skills/mantis-advise/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check a module's trust boundaries before refactoring it
- see which vulnerabilities were confirmed in this file before
- build an architectural remediation dossier from a finding ID
- separate triaged false positives from real holes
- pipe structured findings into a CI step with `--json`

## Example prompts
- Run `advise.py --file src/auth.py` and tell me what's known about the trust boundaries in that file.
- I have finding `<finding_id>`: give me the remediation plan and how to verify it.
- Before I touch `api/app.py`, pull its vulnerability history and the verified patches.

# Security Advisor & Remediation Engine (/mantis-advise)

## System Goal

Proactive Secure Development & Architectural Remediation Engine. Functions as a
security guardrail, advisory assistant, and architectural remediator for
developers and coding agents. Queries Mantis threat models, historical
vulnerability lineages, verified remediation patterns, triaged false positives,
and learned trajectory invariants to ensure that new code and refactors are
implemented securely from the start, and to synthesize robust architectural
remediations for confirmed vulnerabilities.

## Command Definition

- **Command:** `/mantis-advise`
- **Description:** Queries security knowledge for a given target file or module,
  evaluates proposed changes against known threat boundaries, and provides
  verified secure implementation guidance or architectural remediation plans.
- **Execution Command:**
  ```bash
  python3 "${MANTIS_HOME:-/path/to/mantis}/reference/scripts/advise.py" --file <target_file> [--db knowledge.db]
  ```
- **Arguments (optional):**
  - `--file` / `-f` (or `--target` / `-t`): Target source file or component path
    (e.g. `src/auth.py` or `api/app.py`). Defaults to repo-wide scope if
    omitted.
  - `--remediate` / `-r`: Finding ID, lineage UUID, or file to generate an
    architectural remediation dossier and verification plan for.
  - `--db` / `-d`: Path to Mantis SQLite database (default: auto-discovers
    `knowledge.db` or `workspace/knowledge.db`).
  - `--lineage` / `-l`: Query lifecycle and recurrence for a specific lineage
    UUID.
  - `--signature` / `-s`: Query lifecycle for a specific content signature hash.
  - `--json`: Emit structured JSON output instead of formatted markdown.
  - `--full`: Emit unabridged OKF markdown bodies and un-truncated diffs.
