# managing-amazon-msk

Teaches a coding agent how Amazon MSK Provisioned behaves, so it stops treating Standard and Express brokers as the same thing.

## What it does

The skill hands an agent working notes on Amazon MSK Provisioned, covering both Standard and Express brokers. Everything sits in a set of markdown references: performance troubleshooting, consumer lag, storage and tiered storage, cluster sizing, Kafka client settings, cluster configs, topic management, MSK Replicator, CloudWatch alarms, patching and rolling restarts, Streaming Tables for S3 Tables, and data delivery to a plain S3 bucket.

It works by routing. The agent checks the broker type with `aws kafka describe-cluster-v2` and looks at whether `InstanceType` starts with `express.`, then opens the matching file. With the AWS MCP server connected, commands run through it and get logged; otherwise the agent falls back to the AWS CLI or the shell. Check that fallback before you install, since a sandbox without credentials turns the references into reading material.

Scope has edges. MSK Connect is out, and the skill sends you to the docs for it. Migrations belong to `migrate-to-msk`; Iceberg sink questions go to Flink. Serverless appears only for S3 Tables and data delivery. Express clusters have no customer-managed EBS, so any advice to grow a volume or buy provisioned throughput there is wrong.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill managing-amazon-msk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/managing-amazon-msk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill managing-amazon-msk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill managing-amazon-msk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws managing-amazon-msk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill managing-amazon-msk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/managing-amazon-msk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill managing-amazon-msk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/managing-amazon-msk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose a rising consumer lag on a running cluster
- pick between Standard and Express and count the brokers you need
- set up cross-account replication with MSK Replicator for DR
- ship topic data to S3 without Kafka Connect or Firehose
- plan patching and a rolling restart with minimal disruption

## Example prompts
- Our Express cluster has consumer lag climbing. Where do I look and what do I fix?
- We need active-active replication across two accounts. How many partitions should MSK Replicator get?
- Set up data delivery from this topic to an S3 bucket, including the IAM role and output key template.

# Amazon MSK

## Overview

Domain expertise for operating Amazon MSK Provisioned clusters with Standard and Express broker types. Covers performance troubleshooting, consumer lag diagnosis, storage management, cluster sizing, client configuration, and CloudWatch monitoring.

Execute commands using available tools from the AWS MCP server when connected — it provides sandboxed execution, audit logging, and observability. When the MCP server is not available, fall back to the AWS CLI or shell as needed.

**Standard brokers** use customer-managed EBS volumes for storage. You choose instance types (kafka.m5/m7g families), provision EBS, and manage storage scaling.
