# notion-knowledge-capture

Turns a conversation or supplied notes into Notion pages: wiki entries, how-to guides, FAQs, decision records and retrospectives. Handy when agreements and details must survive the chat.

## What it does

The skill reads the current conversation or notes you hand it, then picks a fitting shape: definition and scope, numbered steps, a decision with alternatives, a Q&A list, meeting outcomes. Sections with nothing to fill are left out, and length follows the material.

Finding the destination comes next. A page or database you name is fetched directly; search runs only when the target is unknown. Material on the same topic gets appended to the existing document, while a separate purpose earns a new page. Unrelated sections stay untouched, and conflicting decisions get flagged rather than quietly overwritten. For a database the skill reads the schema once and then uses its real properties and relations.

Writing requires a working Notion connection with search, fetch, create and update tools. With no connection or no write access, the skill hands back a draft and states what was not saved. After an unclear write failure it checks whether the page already exists before retrying, so a retry does not leave duplicates behind.

## Requirements
- Works with: Notion

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill knowledge-capture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/knowledge-capture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill knowledge-capture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill knowledge-capture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install makenotion/notion-cookbook knowledge-capture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill knowledge-capture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/makenotion/notion-cookbook --path skills/mcp-clients/knowledge-capture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill knowledge-capture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/makenotion/notion-cookbook/tree/HEAD/skills/mcp-clients/knowledge-capture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- save meeting agreements as a standalone document
- build an FAQ from questions scattered across a thread
- write a decision record with alternatives and consequences
- append new details to an existing wiki page
- prepare a retrospective draft without publishing it

## Example prompts
- Save the outcomes of this discussion to Notion as a decision record
- Turn our notes into a how-to guide with steps and a verification section
- Collect an FAQ from this thread and add it to the documentation database

# Knowledge capture

Preserve useful knowledge from the conversation in the requested Notion location.
Keep decisions, rationale, technical details, and unresolved questions faithful to
what was actually said.

## Workflow

1. **Identify the material and outcome.** Use the conversation or supplied notes.
   Separate agreed decisions from proposals; do not invent owners, dates,
   consensus, or missing steps. Ask only for missing information that changes the
   content or destination. A draft request produces a draft without publishing.
2. **Choose a structure.** Use the patterns below as needed, omitting empty
   sections. Match length to the material and requested audience. Preserve exact
   commands and configurations; label any suggested additions.
3. **Resolve the destination.** Fetch a supplied page or database directly. Search
   only when the destination or an existing document needs discovery. Update an
   existing document when the material belongs to the same topic; create a page
   when it needs a distinct purpose or the user requests one. Preserve unrelated
   content and flag conflicting decisions instead of silently replacing them.
   For material revisions, retain prior rationale and a dated change note when
   useful for understanding how the knowledge evolved.
4. **Save and connect.** For a database, fetch its schema once and use its actual
   data source, properties, options, and relations. Suggested schemas below are
   design examples, not required properties. Add source and related-page links.
   Update hub navigation, categories, or bidirectional links when requested or
   part of the established destination convention; avoid unrelated reorganization.
5. **Verify and report.** Check the write result and return the created or updated
   page link with a brief description. Read back changed content when the response
   does not establish that the intended update succeeded. Report unresolved gaps.
