# makefile-validator

Runs Makefiles and .mk files through a syntax check, mbake linting and a set of security checks, then reports findings with an exit code.

## What it does

The skill drives a local script, `scripts/validate_makefile.sh <makefile-path>`, through several layers. First a dependency preflight for `python3`, `pip3` and `make`. Then a GNU make dry run, `mbake validate`, `mbake format --check`, and finally custom security and best-practice checks. If `checkmake` or `unmake` are installed, they join in as optional stages.

Exit codes are unambiguous. `0` means no blocking findings, `1` means warnings only, `2` means errors that have to be fixed. Fix, rerun, and stop when the run stops introducing new errors.

The weak spot is `pip3 install mbake`. Behind a proxy or offline that step fails, and you are left with the syntax stage plus a few focused `grep` checks — reduced coverage, and the script says so. Run the validator where PyPI is reachable. It does not write a Makefile from scratch; the same collection ships `makefile-generator` for that.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-validator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/makefile-validator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-validator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-validator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills makefile-validator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-validator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/makefile-validator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-validator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills/tree/HEAD/devops-skills-plugin/skills/makefile-validator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch Makefile errors before CI does
- spot recipe lines indented with spaces instead of tabs
- confirm `.PHONY` and `.DELETE_ON_ERROR` are present
- find credential patterns and other risky rules in a build file
- debug why `make` fails on a specific `.mk` file

## Example prompts
- Validate the Makefile in the project root
- Lint `build.mk` and show me what to fix first
- Check this Makefile for security problems before I merge

# Makefile Validator

## Overview

Use this skill to validate Makefiles with a local-first, deterministic flow.

Default validator entrypoint:

```bash
bash scripts/validate_makefile.sh <makefile-path>
```

Validation layers:

1. Dependency preflight (`python3`, `pip3`, `make`)
2. GNU make syntax check (`make -n --dry-run`) when `make` is available
3. `mbake validate`
4. `mbake format --check`
5. Custom security, best-practice, and optimization checks
6. Optional `checkmake` and `unmake` checks when installed

## Trigger Guidance

Use this skill when the request includes Makefile quality, linting, validation, hardening, or troubleshooting.

### Trigger Phrases

- "Validate this Makefile"
- "Lint my `.mk` file"
- "Find issues in this build Makefile"
- "Check Makefile security problems"
- "Review this Makefile before CI"

### Non-Trigger Examples

- Creating a brand new Makefile from scratch (use `makefile-generator`)
- Running build targets as part of delivery
- General shell scripting work unrelated to Makefiles

## Deterministic Execution Model

Run from this skill directory for shortest commands:

```bash
cd devops-skills-plugin/skills/makefile-validator
```

### Step 1: Preflight

1. Confirm target file exists and is readable.
2. Confirm whether file edits are allowed (`writable`) or only suggestions can be returned (`read-only`).
3. Prefer the default validator path first; use fallbacks only when blocked by environment constraints.

### Step 2: Baseline Validation (Default Path)

```bash
# From skill directory
bash scripts/validate_makefile.sh <makefile-path>
# From repository root
bash devops-skills-plugin/skills/makefile-validator/scripts/validate_makefile.sh <makefile-path>
```

Always record:

- command executed
- exit code
- summary counts (`Errors`, `Warnings`, `Info`)
- issue locations reported by tools

### Step 3: Interpret Output and Exit Code

| Exit code | Meaning | Expected summary line | Action |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `0` | no blocking findings | `Validation PASSED` | optional improvements only |
| `1` | warning-only result | `Validation PASSED with warnings` | fix recommended; merge policy dependent |
| `2` | error result | `Validation FAILED - errors must be fixed` | fix required, then rerun |

### Step 4: Progressive Reference Loading

Open only the docs required by the current findings.

| Finding type | Reference doc |
| --- | --- |
| `.PHONY`, `.DELETE_ON_ERROR`, `.ONESHELL`, variable usage, performance structure | `docs/best-practices.md` |
| tabs vs spaces, dependency mistakes, credential patterns, anti-patterns | `docs/common-mistakes.md` |
