# makefile-generator

This skill scaffolds Makefiles with .PHONY targets, standard GNU goals and validation through makefile-validator. Useful when a project needs a real build file.

## What it does

The skill writes Makefiles for C/C++, Python, Go, Java and language-agnostic projects. It follows GNU Coding Standards, adds standard targets, applies security hardening and validates the result through the `devops-skills:makefile-validator` skill. You get a production-ready file, not a stub.

Generation runs in two stages. First it gathers requirements: language, directory layout, sources, artifacts, PREFIX, which targets you need, compiler and flags. Missing details get asked through AskUserQuestion. Then it reads its own guides — `docs/patterns-guide.md`, `docs/security-guide.md`, `docs/variables-guide.md` and others — before writing anything. For unfamiliar tools it falls back to context7.

One caveat: this skill only creates Makefiles. To check an existing one, use `devops-skills:makefile-validator`; to debug, use `make -d`. If you already have a Makefile and want it fixed rather than rewritten, look elsewhere.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/makefile-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/makefile-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/makefile-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/makefile-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills makefile-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/makefile-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/makefile-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/makefile-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill makefile-generator -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- generate a Makefile from scratch for a Go service
- add standard GNU targets to an existing Makefile
- set up a C build with dependency tracking
- move a manual build process onto make and wire it into CI
- build a multi-binary project with version embedding via ldflags

## Example prompts
- Generate a Makefile for a Go service with install, test and help targets
- Write a production Makefile for a C project with dependency tracking
- Add standard GNU targets to this existing Makefile

# Makefile Generator

## Overview

Generate production-ready Makefiles with best practices for C/C++, Python, Go, Java, and generic projects. Features GNU Coding Standards compliance, standard targets, security hardening, and automatic validation via devops-skills:makefile-validator skill.

## When to Use

- Creating new Makefiles from scratch
- Setting up build systems for projects (C/C++, Python, Go, Java)
- Implementing build automation and CI/CD integration
- Converting manual build processes to Makefiles
- The user asks to "create", "generate", or "write" a Makefile

**Do NOT use for:** Validating existing Makefiles (use devops-skills:makefile-validator), debugging (use `make -d`), or running builds.

## Trigger Phrases

Use this skill when prompts look like:
- "Generate a Makefile for a Go service"
- "Create a production Makefile with install/test/help targets"
- "Write a Makefile for a C project with dependency tracking"
- "Add standard GNU targets to this existing Makefile"

## Generation Workflow

### Stage 1: Gather Requirements

Collect information for the following categories. **Use AskUserQuestion when information is missing or ambiguous:**

| Category | Information Needed |
|----------|-------------------|
| **Project** | Language (C/C++/Python/Go/Java), structure (single/multi-directory) |
| **Build** | Source files, output artifacts, dependencies, build order |
| **Install** | PREFIX location, directories (bin/lib/share), files to install |
| **Targets** | all, install, clean, test, dist, help (which are needed?) |
| **Config** | Compiler, flags, pkg-config dependencies, cross-compilation |

**When to Use AskUserQuestion (MUST ask if any apply):**

| Condition | Example Question |
|-----------|------------------|
| Language not specified | "What programming language is this project? (C/C++/Go/Python/Java)" |
| Project structure unclear | "Is this a single-directory or multi-directory project?" |
| Docker requested but registry unknown | "Which container registry should be used? (docker.io/ghcr.io/custom)" |
| Multiple binaries possible | "Should this build a single binary or multiple executables?" |
| Install targets needed but paths unclear | "Where should binaries be installed? (default: /usr/local/bin)" |
| Cross-compilation mentioned | "What is the target platform/architecture?" |

**When to Skip AskUserQuestion (proceed with defaults):**
- User explicitly provides all required information
