# mailpit-integration

Runs Mailpit inside .NET Aspire so outgoing email is captured locally instead of delivered. Useful when you debug templates or assert on mail in integration tests.

## What it does

The skill walks through adding Mailpit as a container in your AppHost and wiring its SMTP endpoint into the API project. SMTP listens on port 1025, the web UI on 8025. Host, port, SSL flag and from-address go into `appsettings.json` and are read by a settings class.

Sending uses `MailKit`: an `IEmailSender` interface plus an `SmtpEmailSender` implementation that connects, authenticates when credentials are set, and builds the message from an HTML body. The package comes in with `dotnet add package MailKit`. Nothing leaves the machine — Mailpit stores the messages, and you read rendered HTML, raw source, headers and attachments in its web UI or the Aspire dashboard.

For tests there is a `MailpitClient` over `/api/v1/messages`: list messages, clear the inbox, wait for a message matching a predicate within a timeout. The sample test drives a signup flow and asserts that exactly one welcome email arrived with the right recipient and subject. One thing to watch: `EnableSsl` is `false` in the config because Mailpit is local, so point that at your real SMTP before anything ships, or the mail will not go out.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill mailpit-integration -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-mailpit-integration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-mailpit-integration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-mailpit-integration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills aspire-mailpit-integration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-mailpit-integration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --path skills/aspire-mailpit-integration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-mailpit-integration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/aspire-mailpit-integration/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- capture outgoing email during local development
- add an SMTP container to AppHost and reference it from the API
- assert in an integration test that an email was sent with the right body
- inspect rendered HTML and headers of a captured message
- wait for a specific message in a test with a timeout

## Example prompts
- Add Mailpit to the AppHost and wire SMTP into the API project
- Set up SmtpSettings and send mail through MailKit
- Write an integration test: after signup one email arrives with a Welcome subject

# Email Testing with Mailpit and .NET Aspire

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Testing email delivery locally without sending real emails
- Setting up email infrastructure in .NET Aspire
- Writing integration tests that verify emails are sent
- Debugging email rendering and headers

**Related skills:**
- `aspnetcore/mjml-email-templates` - MJML template authoring
- `testing/verify-email-snapshots` - Snapshot test rendered HTML
- `aspire/integration-testing` - General Aspire testing patterns

## What is Mailpit?

[Mailpit](https://github.com/axllent/mailpit) is a lightweight email testing tool that:
- Captures all SMTP traffic without delivering emails
- Provides a web UI to view captured emails
- Exposes an API for programmatic access
- Supports HTML rendering, headers, and attachments

Perfect for development and integration testing.

## Aspire AppHost Configuration

Add Mailpit as a container in your AppHost:

```csharp
// AppHost/Program.cs
var builder = DistributedApplication.CreateBuilder(args);
// Add Mailpit for email testing
var mailpit = builder.AddContainer("mailpit", "axllent/mailpit")
    .WithHttpEndpoint(port: 8025, targetPort: 8025, name: "ui")
    .WithEndpoint(port: 1025, targetPort: 1025, name: "smtp");
// Reference in your API project
var api = builder.AddProject<Projects.MyApp_Api>("api")
    .WithReference(mailpit.GetEndpoint("smtp"))
    .WithEnvironment("Smtp__Host", mailpit.GetEndpoint("smtp"));
builder.Build().Run();
```

---

## SMTP Configuration

### appsettings.json

```json
{
  "Smtp": {
    "Host": "localhost",
    "Port": 1025,
    "EnableSsl": false,
    "FromAddress": "noreply@myapp.com",
    "FromName": "MyApp"
  }
}
```

### Configuration Class

```csharp
public class SmtpSettings
{
    public string Host { get; set; } = "localhost";
    public int Port { get; set; } = 1025;
    public bool EnableSsl { get; set; } = false;
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 7edd10d1fa34bd84

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 7edd10d1fa34bd84 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
