# macos-cleaner

A skill that makes your coding agent find the real cause of disk pressure on a Mac and delete only what you approve. Useful when macOS reports it needs more space for caching.

## What it does

The skill routes the agent to the narrowest path instead of scanning your home directory. It separates the usual suspects: Apple Content Caching, Docker and OrbStack images and volumes, Chromium `*.code_sign_clone` directories, developer caches, large and duplicate files, logs, and leftovers from removed apps. Each case has its own reference file under `references/`, and the agent reads the matching one before proposing any command.

A safety contract runs through the whole flow. Diagnosis is read-only: no deletion, no stopping services, no settings changes. After that the agent lists every command, the expected physical space reclaimed, the impact, and how recoverable it is — then asks. Docker `prune` commands are off the table, because category-wide deletion cannot express intent for a single object. Broad `rm -rf` and glob deletion are discouraged too; for ordinary approved files, Finder Trash is preferred.

The scope is macOS only. Windows and Linux are out, and permission problems belong to a different skill, `macos-permissions`. If you are unsure what is filling the disk, start with the diagnosis rather than deleting: the cost of a wrong call here is lost work or a broken running database.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome, Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill macos-cleaner -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/macos-cleaner/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill macos-cleaner -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill macos-cleaner -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills macos-cleaner
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill macos-cleaner -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-macos/macos-cleaner
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill macos-cleaner -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/daymade-macos/macos-cleaner/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find what is actually eating free space on a Mac
- reclaim Apple Content Caching space without breaking update sharing
- sort large `*.code_sign_clone` directories from Chrome and Playwright
- remove unused Docker images and volumes while keeping active ones
- tell duplicate files apart from working copies before deleting

## Example prompts
- Show me what is filling the disk and propose a cleanup plan
- Analyze Docker and OrbStack caches: what can go and what is in use
- Find large duplicates in my projects and tell me which are safe to remove

# macOS Cleaner

Diagnose the actual source of disk pressure, reclaim only approved space, and prove that the cleanup did not damage user data or co-resident services.

## Entry router

Choose the narrowest path that can answer the request:

| User signal | Route |
|---|---|
| Apple Content Caching, `AssetCacheManagerUtil`, `CacheUsed`, `ActualCacheUsed`, iCloud cache, or “Caching needs more space” | Read `references/apple_content_caching.md` completely before probing or proposing commands |
| Docker, OrbStack, images, containers, or volumes | Read `references/docker_analysis.md`; inspect every object and never use prune-family commands |
| Docker build cache | Measure with `docker builder du`; this skill reports it but does not delete it because Docker exposes category-wide prune controls rather than per-record intent |
| Chrome, ChromeDriver, Playwright, Codex Computer Use, Edge, or Chromium has large `*.code_sign_clone` directories | Read `references/chromium_code_sign_clones.md` completely; use the bundled analyzer to separate active, inactive, and unknown exact children and never equate `du` with physical release |
| A named cache, directory, application, or service is already the suspect | Inspect that target first and read the matching semantics in `references/cleanup_targets.md`; do not start a home-directory or whole-disk scan |
| The user asks what has been growing or filling the disk lately, free space fell between two readings, or an older scan export exists (GrandPerspective text export, saved `du` output) | Read `references/growth_attribution.md`; answer with a delta table whose rows name their writer, not a size ranking |
| The source is genuinely unknown | Use the general analysis workflow below; Mole is optional, not the universal first step |
