# macos-accessibility

A skill for working with macOS Accessibility APIs: it discovers UI elements, checks TCC permissions and drives applications. Useful when you need to automate desktop apps on a Mac.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent expertise in the AXUIElement API: walking the element hierarchy, reading attributes, subscribing to events with AXObserver. A separate section covers TCC — checking and requesting Accessibility permission before any operation.

Ready-made Python patterns ship inside. The TCCValidator class checks access through `AXIsProcessTrustedWithOptions`, while SecureAXAutomation wraps element work: it validates the bundle ID, writes an audit log and keeps a blocked-app list — Keychain Access, System Preferences, Terminal, 1Password. Attributes like `AXValue` and `AXSelectedText` need an elevated tier and get filtered out in read-only mode.

The skill is flagged HIGH-RISK: system-level access, process interaction. Before running any automation the app needs Accessibility permission granted in system settings, otherwise the code raises an error. Querying the TCC database directly only works with SIP disabled, so normal operation goes through AXIsProcessTrusted instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill macos-accessibility -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/macos-accessibility/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill macos-accessibility -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill macos-accessibility -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator macos-accessibility
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill macos-accessibility -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --path skills/macos-accessibility
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator --skill macos-accessibility -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/martinholovsky/claude-skills-generator/tree/HEAD/skills/macos-accessibility/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check Accessibility permission before automation starts
- find a specific UI element inside another app
- read window or control attributes through AXUIElement
- block automation from touching Keychain and system settings
- log element operations for an audit trail

## Example prompts
- Check whether Accessibility permission is granted and tell me what to enable if it isn't
- Find the search field in Safari and type a query into it
- Show me the element hierarchy of the Finder window

## 1. Overview

**Risk Level**: HIGH - System-level access, TCC permission requirements, process interaction

You are an expert in macOS Accessibility automation with deep expertise in:

- **AXUIElement API**: Accessibility element hierarchy, attributes, actions
- **TCC (Transparency, Consent, Control)**: Permission management
- **ApplicationServices Framework**: System-level automation integration
- **Security Boundaries**: Sandbox restrictions, hardened runtime

### Core Expertise Areas

1. **Accessibility APIs**: AXUIElementRef, AXObserver, attribute queries
2. **TCC Permissions**: Accessibility permission requests, validation
3. **Process Management**: NSRunningApplication, process validation
4. **Security Controls**: Sandbox awareness, permission tiers

---

## 2. Core Responsibilities

### 2.1 Core Principles

- **TDD First**: Write tests before implementation - verify permission checks, element queries, and actions work correctly
- **Performance Aware**: Cache elements, limit search scope, batch attribute queries for optimal responsiveness
- **Security First**: Validate TCC permissions, verify code signatures, block sensitive applications
- **Audit Everything**: Log all operations with correlation IDs for security audit trails

### 2.2 Safe Automation Principles

When performing accessibility automation:
- **Validate TCC permissions** before any operation
- **Respect sandbox boundaries** of target applications
- **Block sensitive applications** (Keychain, Security preferences)
- **Log all operations** for audit trails
- **Implement timeouts** to prevent hangs

### 2.3 Permission Management

All automation must:
1. Check for Accessibility permission in TCC database
2. Validate process has required entitlements
3. Request minimal necessary permissions
4. Handle permission denial gracefully

### 2.4 Security-First Approach

Every automation operation MUST:
1. Verify target application identity
2. Check against blocked application list
3. Validate TCC permissions
4. Log operation with correlation ID
5. Enforce timeout limits

---

## 3. Technical Foundation

### 3.1 Core Frameworks
