# claude-md

Creates, updates or audits CLAUDE.md following agent-onboarding practice. Handy once the file grows long and the agent stops following it.

## What it does

The skill runs in three modes: `create` writes `CLAUDE.md` from scratch, `update` cleans up an existing one, `audit` only reports and leaves the file alone. You can pass a path like `src/api/CLAUDE.md` when a directory needs its own instructions.

It starts by reading the project: looks for `CLAUDE.md` at the root, in `.claude/`, across directories and in `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md`, then works out the stack and project type and reads `README.md` plus files such as `package.json` or `pyproject.toml`. Content is organised around three questions: what the technology and structure are, why the project exists, how to work in it. A draft goes up for review, and writing happens after you approve it.

The hard limit is length: under 200 lines. Style and formatting rules get dropped, since prettier and eslint handle those better than a model does. Code snippets are replaced with `file:line` references, because pasted code goes stale. For larger projects the skill suggests moving detail into `agent_docs/` and pointing at it from `CLAUDE.md`. If you ask for `AGENTS.md`, it covers how Claude reads that file directly and when you need an `@AGENTS.md` import or a symlink instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add luongnv89/claude-howto --skill claude-md -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/claude-md/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/claude-md/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add luongnv89/claude-howto --skill claude-md -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/claude-md/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add luongnv89/claude-howto --skill claude-md -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/claude-md/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install luongnv89/claude-howto claude-md
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/claude-md/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add luongnv89/claude-howto --skill claude-md -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/luongnv89/claude-howto --path uk/03-skills/claude-md
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/claude-md/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add luongnv89/claude-howto --skill claude-md -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/luongnv89/claude-howto/tree/HEAD/uk/03-skills/claude-md/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a CLAUDE.md for a fresh repository
- strip lint rules and code blocks out of project instructions
- cut an oversized CLAUDE.md down to a workable length
- audit the file's quality without editing it
- move build and test detail into separate docs

## Example prompts
- create a CLAUDE.md for this project
- update CLAUDE.md and remove everything unnecessary
- audit CLAUDE.md and show me the report
