# lsp-test-correlation

Maps an edited source file to the tests that cover it, then runs just those. Useful when one file changed and the full suite is overkill.

## What it does

The skill sits on top of the agent-lsp MCP server. For every file you edited it calls `get_tests_for_file` to get the matching test files, then `find_symbol` to pull out the individual test function names. `run_tests` executes that narrowed set.

When no test file comes back, there is a fallback: search symbols using the name of the changed function, which catches tests that cover it indirectly. If more than ten test files turn up, the skill tells you to skip the batch and reach for `/lsp-verify` instead. It prints the correlation map before running anything, and afterwards lists failures with a note on what to fix before committing.

None of this works without the agent-lsp MCP server — all four tools come from it. Multi-file edits get their own order of operations: query the files in parallel, drop duplicate test files, run the deduplicated set once.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-test-correlation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/lsp-test-correlation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-test-correlation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-test-correlation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install blackwell-systems/agent-lsp lsp-test-correlation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-test-correlation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --path skills/lsp-test-correlation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-test-correlation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp/tree/HEAD/skills/lsp-test-correlation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find which tests cover a file you just edited
- run a scoped test set instead of the whole package
- locate the test file behind a failing source file
- check test coverage for a file before merging
- collapse duplicate test files across a multi-file change

## Example prompts
- I edited `internal/tools/symbol_source.go` — which tests should I run?
- Find the tests for `internal/lsp/client.go` and run them
- Show me the test correlation map for my changed files, don't run anything yet

# lsp-test-correlation

Discover which tests cover a source file, then run only those tests. Faster
than running the full suite when you've changed one or two files and want
targeted feedback.

## When to use

- After editing a source file: "Which tests do I need to run for this change?"
- Before committing: run only the tests that cover what you touched
- Debugging a failure: find which test file corresponds to a broken source file
- Code review: understand what test coverage exists for a file before merging

Use `/lsp-verify` instead when you want to run the full suite and check all
three layers (diagnostics + build + tests). Use this skill when you want fast,
scoped test execution.

---

## Workflow

### Step 1 — Find correlated test files

Call `get_tests_for_file` for each edited source file:

```
mcp__lsp__get_tests_for_file({ "file_path": "/abs/path/to/source.go" })
```

Returns the test files that correspond to the source file. For multiple edited
files, call once per file.

**If no test files are returned:** the source file may have no dedicated test
file, or the mapping is not resolvable (e.g. integration tests in a separate
directory). See Step 2 for fallback.

### Step 2 — Enumerate test functions (fallback or enrichment)

If `get_tests_for_file` returns test files, use `find_symbol` to list
the test functions defined in those files:

```
mcp__lsp__find_symbol({ "query": "Test" })
```

Filter results to the correlated test files from Step 1. This gives you the
specific test function names to run rather than the whole test file.

**Fallback (no test files found):** query `find_symbol` for test
functions that contain the changed symbol's name:

```
mcp__lsp__find_symbol({ "query": "Test<ChangedFunctionName>" })
```

This catches cases where `get_tests_for_file` misses indirect coverage.

### Step 3 — Report the correlation map

Before running, report what was found:

```
## Test correlation for <file>
Source file: internal/tools/analysis.go
Test files:
  → internal/tools/analysis_test.go
     Tests: TestHandleGetCodeActions, TestHandleGetCompletions, TestHandleGetDocumentSymbols
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 76c0527685ab445c

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 76c0527685ab445c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
