# lsp-rename

Renames functions, methods, variables and types across a workspace in two phases: it lists every affected site first, then edits after you confirm.

## What it does

The skill drives the agent-lsp MCP server. It locates the symbol definition, asks the language server whether a rename is valid at that spot, gathers all references and runs a dry run. You get a list of files and lines that would change. Then it stops: no edit lands until you answer “y”.

In the second phase it records diagnostics, performs the rename and compares errors afterwards. The server writes the edit itself, so nothing has to be reassembled from the response — that hand-copying is what used to mangle files with shifted ranges and clipped text.

Nothing runs without agent-lsp up. The skill calls `mcp__lsp__start_lsp` when the server is not initialized, and switching to another workspace needs an explicit start. If no references come back, it warns that the symbol may be unexported or dead code and asks whether to continue.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-rename -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/lsp-rename/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-rename -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-rename -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install blackwell-systems/agent-lsp lsp-rename
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-rename -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --path skills/lsp-rename
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-rename -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp/tree/HEAD/skills/lsp-rename/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rename a method and update every call site
- see which files change before anything is written
- rename a type or variable without grepping the repo by hand
- check whether the rename introduced new errors
- back out cleanly when the language server refuses the rename

## Example prompts
- Rename `OldName` to `NewName` across the whole workspace
- Show me every usage of `parseConfig` before changing the name
- Do a safe rename of the `UserID` symbol to `UserId`

# lsp-rename: Safe Symbol Rename

Renames a symbol across the workspace in two phases: preview first, then execute
only after explicit confirmation. Never renames without showing impact.

**Invocation:** User provides `old_name` (the symbol to rename) and `new_name`
(the replacement). Optionally provide `workspace_root` to scope the search.

---

## Prerequisites

If LSP is not yet initialized, call `mcp__lsp__start_lsp` with the workspace
root first. Auto-inference applies when file paths are provided, but an explicit
start is required when switching workspaces.

---

## Phase 1: Preview

Find the symbol, enumerate all references, and produce a dry-run preview.
**Do not apply any edits in this phase.**

### Step 1 — Locate the symbol

Call `mcp__lsp__go_to_symbol` with `symbol_path` set to `old_name`:

```
mcp__lsp__go_to_symbol
  symbol_path: "old_name"        # or "Package.OldName" for qualified paths
  workspace_root: "<root>"       # optional; omit to search entire workspace
```

This returns the definition location (file, line, column). If not found, report
the error and stop.

### Step 2 — Validate rename is possible
