# lsp-architecture

Produces a structural overview of a repository: languages, packages, entry points, dependency flow and hotspot files. One call instead of a manual sweep.

## What it does

The skill walks a workspace and returns a report: language breakdown with file counts, a package tree with a note on each package's role, entry points as `file:line`, the most heavily referenced files, and an arrow diagram of how top-level packages depend on each other. It is read-only and touches nothing on disk.

Five steps drive it. First the LSP server starts and the skill detects which language servers exist in the workspace root. Then it counts files by extension, queries symbols to rebuild the package hierarchy, hunts entry points under common names such as `main` and `Run`, and runs `blast_radius` on the busiest files to see how many non-test callers a change would reach. That tool keeps a persistent cache, so asking about the same file twice is instant.

The agent-lsp MCP server is required — the skill will not start without it. You also need a language server that supports `documentSymbolProvider`; `workspaceSymbolProvider` and `referencesProvider` are optional and only widen the report. Depth limits are strict: 30 packages, 10 hotspot files, 5 symbol queries, and no recursion into `vendor/`, `node_modules/` or `.git/`. On a monorepo with far more packages than that, expect the map to stop early.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/lsp-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install blackwell-systems/agent-lsp lsp-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --path skills/lsp-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add blackwell-systems/agent-lsp --skill lsp-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/blackwell-systems/agent-lsp/tree/HEAD/skills/lsp-architecture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get oriented in an unfamiliar repository's package layout
- locate CLI and HTTP entry points
- spot files that are risky to change because of caller count
- see how code is split across languages
- sketch package dependencies before a refactor

## Example prompts
- Give me an architecture overview of `/home/user/myproject`
- Map the packages and entry points in the current working directory
- Find the hotspot files and measure their blast radius

# lsp-architecture

Generate a structural architecture overview of any codebase: language
distribution, package hierarchy, entry points, dependency flow, and hotspot
files. One invocation for the big picture.

Read-only; does not modify any files.

**Invocation:** User provides the workspace root path (e.g.
`"/home/user/myproject"`). If omitted, use the current working directory.

---

## Depth Controls (hard limits)

These limits are strict constraints. Never exceed them:

- Package enumeration: **cap at 30 packages**
- Hotspot analysis: **cap at 10 files**
- Workspace symbol queries: **cap at 5 queries**
- Do NOT recurse into `vendor/`, `node_modules/`, `.git/`, or other dependency directories

---

## Step 0 — Initialize

If LSP is not yet running, start it with the workspace root:

```
mcp__lsp__start_lsp({
  "workspace_root": "<workspace-root>"
})
```

Then detect which language servers are available:

```
mcp__lsp__detect_lsp_servers({
  "workspace_root": "<workspace-root>"
})
→ returns: list of detected servers with language names and file patterns
```

Record the available languages and their file globs. This determines which
queries to run in later steps.

---

## Step 1 — Language Detection

Scan the workspace to determine language distribution. Use file extension
counts from the detected servers and supplement with a filesystem scan
(via Glob tool) to count files per language.

For each detected language, report:
- Language name
- File count
- Estimated lines of code (sample 3-5 representative files and extrapolate)

Skip files in `vendor/`, `node_modules/`, `.git/`, `dist/`, `build/`, and
other common dependency or output directories.

---

## Step 2 — Package Structure

Use `find_symbol` with broad queries to discover the package and
