## What it does

The skill walks the whole path from a designer's file to a shipped product. Animation travels as JSON or as a packed `.lottie`, and a runtime plays it on the web, iOS, Android and React Native. Inside you get `@lottiefiles/dotlottie-web` and the `@lottiefiles/dotlottie-react` wrapper, playback control, interactivity, theming, and an export checklist for After Effects.

Control happens on the instance: `play`, `pause`, `setSpeed`, `setMode` with `forward`, `reverse`, `bounce` and `reverse-bounce`, plus `setFrame` and `setSegment` to hold playback inside a frame range. The `load`, `complete` and `frame` events let you chain states — a button that runs a “checked” segment and then drops into an idle loop, for instance. Scroll and pointer work goes through `@lottiefiles/lottie-interactivity`, where `scroll`, `hover`, `click`, `play` and `cursor` modes map to frame ranges without hand-written listeners.

Recoloring takes one of two routes. Named themes embedded in a `.lottie` switch with `setTheme` and `loadTheme`. Patching colors by hand means walking `layers[].shapes[]` and rewriting the `c.k` arrays, and that breaks the moment layer structure changes — themes are the sturdier choice. Start new work on the dotLottie runtime; keep `lottie-web` for legacy `.json` files and SVG rendering.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill lottie-animation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/lottie-animation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill lottie-animation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill lottie-animation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/web-animation-skills lottie-animation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill lottie-animation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/web-animation-skills --path skills/lottie-animation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/web-animation-skills --skill lottie-animation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/iart-ai/web-animation-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/lottie-animation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- hand off an After Effects animation to web or mobile
- drive animation frames from page scroll without GSAP
- swap animation colors for a dark theme without a re-export
- play a single frame range and return to an idle loop
- shrink animation file size before shipping

## Example prompts
- Wire `hero.lottie` onto a canvas with `@lottiefiles/dotlottie-web`, autoplay off
- Make the animation scrub its frames as the `.scrolly` section scrolls
- Recolor the icon for dark mode using `setTheme`

# Lottie Animation

The bridge from After Effects to product: vector animation shipped as JSON (or zipped `.lottie`), tiny and resolution-independent, played by a runtime on web, iOS, Android, and React Native. This skill covers integrating, controlling, and exporting Lottie.

## When to use

- Ship a designer's AE animation to web/iOS/Android/React Native
- Looping illustrations, onboarding, empty states, animated icons
- Scroll-driven or interaction-driven vector playback (hover, click, cursor)
- Runtime theming/recoloring instead of re-exporting per brand

## Formats: .json vs .lottie

- `.json` — the raw Bodymovin output. Human-readable, larger.
- `.lottie` — a zipped container (often 60–80% smaller) that can bundle multiple animations, images, and theming. Preferred for shipping. Player: `@lottiefiles/dotlottie-web` (modern, canvas + WASM) supersedes the older `lottie-web`.

Prefer the **dotLottie** runtime for new work; use `lottie-web` only for legacy `.json` + SVG renderer needs.

## Core workflow (web, dotLottie)

```bash
npm i @lottiefiles/dotlottie-web        # vanilla
npm i @lottiefiles/dotlottie-react      # React wrapper
```

Vanilla:

```js
import { DotLottie } from "@lottiefiles/dotlottie-web";
const dotLottie = new DotLottie({
  canvas: document.querySelector("#lottie"),  // a <canvas> element
  src: "/hero.lottie",                         // or .json
  loop: true,
  autoplay: true,
  // speed: 1, mode: "forward" | "reverse" | "bounce", renderConfig: { autoResize: true }
});
```

React:

```jsx
import { DotLottieReact } from "@lottiefiles/dotlottie-react";
function Hero() {
  return <DotLottieReact src="/hero.lottie" loop autoplay style={{ width: 320 }} />;
}
```

Capture the instance to control it:

```jsx
const [dl, setDl] = useState(null);
<DotLottieReact src="/icon.lottie" dotLottieRefCallback={setDl} />;
