# loopify

Turns "this task should run periodically" into a working loop, picking the pacing and adding idempotency plus a bail-out.

## What it does

The skill walks through the setup in steps. First it asks what the loop does each iteration, how often it runs, when it should stop, where output goes, and what happens if a run fires twice. Then it routes you to one of three patterns. A fixed schedule via `CronCreate` with a cron expression, for tasks tied to a time of day. Dynamic pacing via `ScheduleWakeup`, when the loop reacts to state instead of the clock. A one-shot loop via the built-in `/loop`, with the exit condition written into the prompt.

The loop body has to be idempotent, and the skill pushes for it: a last-run marker, dedupe keys, transactions, or a state check before any mutation. Skip this and cron and dynamic patterns break, because they fire while the previous iteration is still running. A bail-out is mandatory too — max iterations, a metric threshold, a time bound, or a stop after consecutive failures. Even an endless weekly cron gets a manual exit through `CronDelete`, documented in the loop notes.

\`CronCreate`, `ScheduleWakeup` and `/loop` are Claude features. On other hosts the scheduler lives outside the agent, and the skill points to cron or GitHub Actions with a headless agent CLI; pattern choice, idempotency and bail-out still apply. This is not for authoring a new skill or wiring up a tool — the sibling skills in the same set cover those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill loopify -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/loopify/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/loopify/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill loopify -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/loopify/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill loopify -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/loopify/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install coreyhaines31/makerskills loopify
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/loopify/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill loopify -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills --path skills/loopify
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/loopify/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill loopify -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills/tree/HEAD/skills/loopify/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run a daily brief at the same hour every day
- watch a metric and stop once it drops below a threshold
- make the loop body idempotent so a re-run changes nothing
- cap iterations so the loop cannot spin forever
- choose between fixed cron and self-scheduled pacing

## Example prompts
- /loopify — set up a loop that compiles my vault notes every Sunday
- /loopify poll the build status every 5 minutes, stop after 10 iterations
- /loopify make this task recurring and show me how to kill it later

name: loopify
description: When you want to set up an agent loop, cron-scheduled task, or recurring workflow that runs autonomously. Judgment layer on top of Claude Code's ScheduleWakeup, CronCreate, and /loop — or, on other hosts, cron/GitHub Actions plus a headless agent CLI. Picks dynamic pacing, fixed cron, or a one-shot loop; designs idempotent loop bodies; sets bail-out conditions so loops don't run forever. Examples — weekly review pulse, daily brief, hourly metric monitor, periodic vault compile, upstream-check for an adapted skill. Triggers on "/loopify," "set up a loop," "schedule this task," "run this daily," "run this weekly," "cron this," "make this recurring," "automate this on a schedule," "keep this running until X." Part of the -ify trifecta (skillify / toolify / loopify). NOT for authoring a new skill — that's skillify. NOT for adding a tool/integration — that's toolify.

# /loopify — Set up an agent loop

Wizard for going from *"this task should run periodically"* to a working loop with the right pacing, idempotency, and bail-out. Reference (Claude Code): `ScheduleWakeup` (dynamic pacing), `CronCreate` (fixed schedule), and the built-in `/loop` (dynamic self-paced re-entry). Other hosts: see "On hosts other than Claude Code" in Step 4.

## Step 0 — Confirm what you're looping

Ask if not obvious from context: *"What task should this loop do each iteration?"*

Then get the essentials:

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| **How often?** | Determines cron vs dynamic vs one-shot |
| **When to stop?** | Bail-out condition — loops must have one |
| **What's the loop body doing?** | Determines idempotency requirements |
| **Where does output go?** | File / notification / commit / nothing |
| **What's the failure mode if it runs twice?** | Idempotency validation |

## Step 1 — Pick the pattern

Three primary patterns. Route by the answer to "how often":

### Pattern A — Cron (fixed schedule)

**Use when**: task runs at predictable intervals — daily at 8am, weekly on Fridays, hourly on the hour.

Tool: `CronCreate` — schedules a recurring task with a cron expression.

```
CronCreate({
  schedule: "0 8 * * *",           // daily at 8am local
  prompt: "<loop body prompt>",
  timezone: "America/Los_Angeles"
})
```

Common cron patterns:
- `0 8 * * *` — daily at 8am
- `0 9 * * 1` — Mondays at 9am
- `0 9 * * 5` — Fridays at 9am
- `0 */2 * * *` — every 2 hours
